Customer Reviews

Perfect fit for a Mid-2012 15" MBP! Perfect fit for a Mid-2012 15" MBP! I've done a lot of upgrades on various MacBooks over the years and this HDD adapter has the best fitment I've seen in quite a while. All 3 case mounting screw tabs were spot on, as were both SATA connectors and the 4 HDD mounting screws. And it includes a #00 phillips for all the ridiculously tiny screws... My new WD 750GB Black has ZERO issues! $10 is a no brainer compared to that $29 OWC caddy. Lots of these caddys listed - GET THIS ONE! Follow the install guides at iFixit.com, you'll be done in 30 minutes. Oh, moved the superdrive to this USB 3.0 enclosure: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NAMU5V4/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2 5Handy (and great!) Upgrade Used this item to install a second hard drive in my trusty MacBook Pro 2012 (v9,2). I travel a lot, and I've grown tired of limited integrated on-the-go storage for my image and graphics files. And I don't like traveling/flying with an external drive. So I took the plunge on this and installed a Seagate 2TB FireCuda drive as a second, media storage drive. (my primary drive is a 1TB samsung EVO) The install went fine, it fits perfectly, but the whole disassembly/reassembly process is a bit tricky with the miniature screws involved. Pro Tip: a slightly magnetized screw driver is amazingly helpful. As other reviewers have said, there are basically no "real" instructions included with this caddy, so do yourself a huge favor and google how to do it before you get at it. It will save you time and heartache, and maybe even a trip to the repair shop if you break one of the many small components inside your MacBook. Highly recommended. Also, to retain the ability to play CDs and DVDs (at my desk) occasionally, I picked up an LG external writer/player for like $25 here on Amazon. Works like a charm. No need to go SuperDrive. And I wouldn't bother messing with putting the newly liberated internal DVD drive in a third party case. Not worth the hassle for a 6 year old drive, IMO. 5Perfect upgrade for the last few MACBOOKPROs that are upgradeable... This has worked perfectly for my 2011 i7 2.3GHz MacBookPro 15.4" with a 120GB SSD and 16GB RAM. I was quickly running out of hard drive space and needed a solution. I had a 1TB 7200RPM HDD laying around so I started looking for options. When I found this internal solution I was completely elated that I could add a 2nd HDD into my sleek MacBookPro without an external cable and drive lugging around. Now I have the super fast 120GB SSD for the Operating System and 1TB HDD for unlimited storage. I also added the MacBookPro DVD Superdrive into an OWC external container so I still have access to my CD/DVD drive on that rare occasion that it is needed. Win/Win for legacy MacBookPro owners. 5did its job fine no complaints (SEE NOTE) they say "instructions are online" which is true, there are tons of good youtube videos on how to install this to your optical drive (i used OWC's "data doubler" video even tho i wasnt using their caddy- highly recommend them. their channel on YT is "macsales" i believe)so thats cool but the lack of instructions kinda suck when youve installed it in meticulously and then when youre done you realize its all covered this film of plastic and youre not sure if you should leave it or not????????NOTE: if you are using this for a macbook pro mid 2012 or similar unibody models, YOU NEED TO TAKE THE LITTLE BRACKET+SCREWS OFF THE ORIGINAL OPTICAL DRIVE AND INSTALL ON THIS IN THE SAME POSITION. its like the only bracket on the drive so its hard to miss. make sure you get both the screws and set them aside so they dont get mixed up, then install in the same exact position near the SATA connection iirc. its easier to install on caddy if you leave first screw loose so you can line up the holes. very important! dont throw the bracket away or miss it! 4E-Z Upgrade! This was an E-Z upgrade. I have a mid 2012 13inch MacBook Pro and the optical drive stopped working. Since I didn't use it very often the idea of adding an additional SSD Hard drive was very appealing. There are a few reviews that appear to have had issues I did not encounter. This was a very simple drop in project. 15 minutes and you should be done. I would suggest a quick search on YouTube for videos if you have never opened you mac. 5Easy install, works great. Identical to items from other sellers Fit a 2011 13" MacBook Pro perfectly, and the drive was recognized with no problems. Speeds seem sufficient, but the connector on the machine is a SATA II, so I'd only use the optical bay for a platter HDD. Other laptops might use the faster SATA III.I ordered another drive caddy with a different brand name sticker attached to it, but the items were completely identical, down to the display card that comes in the package. In my opinion there is no need to buy an item like this branded specifically for Macs.I've seen some reviews claim that the build quality is low, but it seems great to me. It's basically a sheet metal and plastic holder with a SATA connector, but I'm not sure what else you need. It seems well made enough for $8. It comes with 4 screws to hold the drive in place, and a screwdriver. One note would be to remove the bracket from the back of the original optical drive and affix it to the caddy before installation, so the back has a way to mount to the computer. Installation took all of 10 minutes. 5It's in there and it works fine, but it's angled somewhat funny It worked for what I needed it to in an ASUS N53S. I moved the old hard drive into this caddy and put a new SSD in the main hard drive bay.Unfortunately, the metal bar from the laptop that I needed to screw onto this caddy using very tiny screws didn't fit properly. 3 of the 4 screw holes were at least in the right place, but they were too close to the metal base so that the metal bar I was putting on top couldn't sit down far enough to line up all the way. Only 2 of the holes actually lined up close enough for me to wedge a little screw in there, and it's definitely not properly screwed in even so.Possibly because of the ill fit of that metal bar, I couldn't get the caddy to sit in the laptop very stright. It's in there and it works fine, but it's angled somewhat funny, with one side pressing down on the bottom of the opening and the other side up near the top where it seems like it should be.Finally, there's really nothing I could do to make it look nice. I couldn't put the old DVD drive's door on this caddy, and the caddy sits in a little ways from the edge so it just kind looks like there's an opening in the side of the laptop. But, I mostly expected this and I knew I wasn't getting a part that was going to make the side of the laptop look great. It ended up working well enough as I said, but I would have preferred a caddy that fit the screw holes my bracket had better, and that could sit within the slot in my laptop a little straighter. Most of my issues are likely not problems with the caddy itself, since it's "universal" and can't fit everything perfectly. So I'm not docking much score-wise for the fit issues with my specific laptop since many people who use this caddy seem to say it fits great.I'm happy with the build quality of the caddy. I'm also happy it included a tiny screw driver, as it saved me having to search around for one I've got that would fit those tiny screws. 4It has issues, if you are ready for them it's not a problem I did read the reviews and knew this caddy would have issues, but just couldn't justify spending the $25 on the "official" one of these. Here is the rundown:PROS:- Hard drive fits in the caddy great- Made of metal so it is nice and sturdy- SATA connection is not loose or wobbly- Screwdriver included did come in handy, however it is too big for the actual screws but helped with other parts of taking the laptop apartCONS:- Weird sticky plastic wrapping is awkward and very difficult to remove before inserting- Missing one of the critical mounting points so a command strip had to be placed under the caddy to keep it from putting stress on the bluetooth and wifi connections- Screw "holes" are actually rounded slits which makes getting the screws in very challenging, and for me it became a 2 person jobOverall this caddy worked for what I wanted it to and once I was able to troubleshoot all of the issues, it seems to be functioning as expected. If you have patience and the willingness to do some workarounds in order to save $17 it is well worth it. 3Fits Perfectly in MacBookPro (13 inch, Mid 2012) Superdrive Spot Comes with screwdriver. SSD fits perfectly. Erased and reformatted SSD to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" setting Partition Map to "GUID Partition Map". DON'T attempt cloning with online instructions using Disk Utility and Recovery built into Mac OS. Wasted 2 hours only to have it FAIL at the last minute. Just use "Carbon Copy Cloner" free for 30 days and be done with it in 20 minutes. Using SSD as system disk, MacBookPro now boots Mojave OS in 15 seconds. 5Works really good Great purchase to add a HDD or SDD if you don't need/want your CD port. I have a USB blue ray player so nothing really lost. I do recommend that if you buy one of these beauties, to watch a couple of videos on youtube. I put this in my mid 2012 MacBook Pro. OS Mohave proved too much for my Mac and I couldn't just roll back the OS. I found an old HDD that I had upgraded from in 2014 with an older OS on it. At that point I bought this product, a crucial 500gb SDD and a newer external case from Sabrent for $9.99. Installed the old HDD and trimmed it down a few gbs so it would clone to the Crucial. Put the Crucial in the external case and cloned the drive with Superduper!, then opened the Mac again and replaced the Crucial in the primary spot and installed my hdd in the caddy. It is a bit difficult, but watched an install video a few times to make sure I was on the right track. Sealed up and now my MacBook Pro is killing it again with High Sierra even faster than before. 5
