Description

  • X2 CPL (Circular Polarizer) FILTER: The X2 CPL filter features critically sharp AGC glass made in Japan. Resolving critically sharp and delivering excellent color neutrality, the X2 CPL features an ultra-slim frame profile, MRC8 and durable weather-sealed construction.
  • MRC8 CREDIT FILTER: Uniformly applied MRC8 to eliminate unwanted glare and ghosting which easily get's compounded at long exposures. Our MRC8 is structurally harder than the glass itself, providing a protective scratch-resistant layer, shielding the glass from the elements of frequent fieldwork.
  • NANOTEC: In addition to state-of-the-art MRC8, our optical engineers developed new nano coating layer technology, called nanotec, from the ground up to repel dirt, water and other elements by beading rather than absorbing and smearing. Set in our completely weather-sealed X2 traction frame the X2 CPL was built to withstand the harshest of environmental conditions.
  • FITMENT: This CPL filter is compatible with all 77mm camera lenses. Your lens thread size will be printed underneath your lens cap or written somewhere on the lens barrel. Make sure you order the correct size otherwise it will not fit your lens.
  • 25 YEARS SUPPORT: We stand behind every CPL filter we make with our 25 Year Ironclad Guarantee. Every X2 CPL filter has a unique serial number laser engraved on the interior frame. When you activate your 25 Year Ironclad Guarantee, we assign this serial number to you, so any future discussions on this unique filter are tracked, issues recorded and all that stuff which goes into future product design.

Customer Reviews

Good build, not so good polarization The product is well built, the manufacturer seems to actively support it. I cannot speak for their other filters, but this is a circular polarizer and thus its primary criteria is how well it does THAT before anything else! And alas, it's not very good at it.I like to give new and smaller companies a chance, looked at the overall positive review average and dismissed the negative ones as being too picky perhaps. Unfortunately, they were right...But rather than simply reiterate their issues with this product, I'll try to upload a short video to demonstrate it, using it in front of an LCD screen (which works on the principle of polarization and thus is a great way for anyone to check this)So not only is the X2 filter not even remotely 100% effective which is not good for obvious reasons, but whatever effectiveness it has results in a severe color shift to blue, which is a major issue if you manually set a white balance for a series of shots in the same environment. The B+W filter next to it demonstrates that it can be done, both in terms of effectiveness as well as neutrality. And interestingly it is a (Kaesemann) High Transmission one that this manufacturer claims is LESS effective. Now maybe there will be a claim that using the X2 filter is "tuned for daylight, not screens" or some such thing, but I'd like my filter to work in the same predictable way in ANY light condition. Again, the B+W filter demonstrates that this can be done.So if you come with a similar expectation of performance as the posters of the positive reviews, great. But if you come with a similar expectation as mine (based on past experience), this product is not for you. 2Excellent build quality and performance This is the first circular Polarizer I have ever owned, so I can't say if it's better than a different manufacturer or not. I do, however, own a bunch of B+W filters and I will say that the build quality of the Breakthrough filter is just as good, if not superior. I like the way the design allows me to use a lens hood at all times. I can actually carefully reach in with a fingernail and turn the polarizer without removing the hood. The movement is very smooth, with just the right amount of friction. Although just beginning to use it, I have had a good deal of success shooting on the water in bright sunlight already. Recommended. 5Excellent filter. On par or BETTER than any of the top brands! As a photographer who has been shooting images for over 45 years, it takes an outstanding filter to make me impressed. I bought two CPL X2 filters for a recent trip to Northern Europe. They were both outstanding in my opinion. First, they are very neutral in color. Not warm, not cool. Also, I would rate them at about 1/2 to 2/3 EV loss at most. Construction was top notch as well. Very easy turning bezel...read correct machining tolerances with quality materials. As far as the 25 year warranty goes. I hope that they and I will be around then...time will tell. Get yourself one and be ready to be impressed. BTW...I paid full price for both filters. 5Perfect for landscape photography I use this on my Canon 10-22 mm wide angle lens. Love the sharp, rich colors...and no vignetting. I pair this with the ND 6 filter for long exposure landscape shots. I also have the step-up ring so I can use on a different sized lens without having to bring extra filters with me on the road.I like its slim and sleek profile....the only downside is that sometimes the filter jams and I have a hard time getting it off the lens since there's not much for me to grab on to. The one time I kept it slightly loose, it fell to the ground - the aluminum got chipped but fortunately the glass stayed intact. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it and have slowly been upgrading my old filters to this brand. 5Test of three polarizers: AmazonBasics, Tiffen, X2 I bought three circular polarizers: AmazonBasics ($13.99), Tiffen ($28.17), and Breakthrough Photography s X2 ($89).The first test throws out the AmazonBasics due to color problems (it turns everything brown). A weekend of ruined pictures with that filter confirmed this. The Tiffen looks better than the X2. The polarization is stronger, and the X2 appears to be slightly brownish.A weekend using the Tiffen returned slightly brownish pictures. Breakthrough Photography's website shows tests of the Tiffen and their X4 ($129). The Tiffen looks worse at long (red) wavelengths and the X4 looks worse at short (blue) wavelengths.I usually leave my camera on AWB; this weekend I'll try other white balance settings. Also I'll pay more attention to the sun's position and leave the polarizer off when it's not doing anything. I suspect that the photographer's skill is more important than the differences between filters! 3Fantastic Filter at a Fair Price I recently travelled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and quickly realized what I had expected. The sun is much harsher than in Maine and a very good polarizing flitter was critical and I needed it fast. The local shop had a Zeise filter for $199. While I do like to shop local, I went on Amazon and ordered a lens to be delivered in one day for half the price. This filter is amazing just as all the reviews assured that it was (thank you to the other reviewers). What an amazing difference and I could not be happier. I received a nice note before the filter arrived and follow-up which was appreciated. I am attaching a few photographs to show the impact that this filter had in the early afternoon sun and a fire at sunset. I highly recommend this filter and this wonderful new company that is really doing things right. THANK YOU Amazon and Breakthrough Photography for saving my bacon. 5Love love love it Love love love it!! Quality is awesome and no issues whatsoever. No regrets.took this on my trip to Ireland with the 10 stop ND filter and can't ask for anything better to use with my Zeiss 21 ZE lens. Fantastic shots and no degradation whatsoever from these filters. The link provided were shots I took while on my trip. I am still processing them all but looking at the Zeiss 21 long exposures in the gallery - you can see the quality of the pictures taken using the 10 stop and stacked with the CPL.[...] 5Hey man nice shot Really phenomenal lens filter worth the few extra $$$ vs competitors offering same or similar specs. The ridges make a huge difference when needing to change filters. Little to no vignetting and quality glass. Using on a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8. Photos are paired with their 6 stop ND filter 5Excellent quality and worth the price I will not claim to be a filter aficionado. I don't have a ton of experience with filters, but when I finally got some Canon L glass I knew I wanted some top-shelf filters. I've used cheap Hoya and Tiffen filters on my kit lenses and they were sufficient, but if I knew I wasn't going to stick a $20 filter in front of a $1200 lens. My first thought was to go to B+W since they seem to be the "go-to" for top-quality stuff. A little bit of internet research kept leading me to a Breakthrough Photography, a company I'd never even heard of before. After reading around about the company, their commitment, and the testimonials of a few people I figured I'd give them a try. Plus, I always want to support a company in the USA if I can and these guys are in San Francisco. I bought an X2 circular polarizer and an X2 3-stop ND. The first thing I was impressed by with these filters was the packaging; I know it has nothing to do with the performance of the product, but good packaging tells you how the company wants their product perceived. The Breakthrough filters come in a nice 2-piece box, then a hard plastic clamshell to hold the filter, which is surrounded in soft foam. There's also a nice red cleaning cloth and a warranty paper (25 years!). As for the filter itself, the quality and craftsmanship is immediately apparent. Probably the nicest thing is the scalloped edges which allow for effortless threading and unthreading. I've had other polarizers get a little stuck on the lens because the ring wants to turn but the threads won't come undone. Not the case with this filter. The rotation on the polarized ring is very, very smooth and not too stiff or too loose. With the camera in live-view the effects are very noticeable especially on highly reflective surfaces like water. I included a picture with and without the polarizer to show just how much glare it reduces on a running stream; it's incredibly impressive. I've also included another picture taken with both the CPL and a 3-stop ND to get a nice, sharp 6-second exposure. There's nothing I dislike about these filters and I might end up getting more if I find good use-cases for them. 5Better than what you bargained for This filter is great. I've used other CPL filters and there always seemed to be quirks about them, whether it be sticky rotations, hard to mount or un-mount on the lens, or coloration of the image. This filter had none of those issues. It goes on easily and with a positive feeling that you have some comfort it won't fall off while you're shooting, which has happened to me before, and it operates smoothly from behind the viewfinder. I have found no coloration from this filter at all, just the elimination of glare and deepening of colors where it's supposed to do so. The ring itself is nicely dimpled so that you can easily feel where to grab and turn without looking. This filter is light but feels very strong in construction, made to be used over and over for years, and it is thin enough that I had this and a matching ND filter stacked on a 16mm lens without any vignetting. I am totally satisfied with this filter and enthusiastically recommend it to anyone that needs a CPL, or needs to upgrade from what they already have. 5
