Customer Reviews

yes it will read Bluray UHD .... but This is a popular drive because it's known to be UHD friendly. I purchased a pair of them for this purpose and needed to reburn the firmware to make them ready UHD blurays once again. If you are late to the game, the manufactures of all these UHD friendly drives started rolling out firmware to spin the disc down when it detects UHD media so you have to downgrade the firmware to make it work with UHD discs if you recently purchase this drive. Whatever you do, make sure you know what you are doing before you downgrade the firmware, you cannot just reflash firmware you find on the web into the drive since you have to "port" the calibration date with the firmware. So you have to pull the firmware off you drive, merge it with "clean" and older firmware, then overwrite the firmware. I'm leaving details out but that's the gist and want to make sure before you buy this drive you know what you are in for. 4No problems with triple-layer BDXL discs unlike LG units; but newer firmwares prevent you from crossflashing/downgrading. Pros:Fast unit, able to read triple-layer BDXL discs found in 4K UHD movies*** (see con)Black bezel matches perfectly with a vantec external usb enclosure.Cons:Asus is being shady and is locking the firmware preventing you from downgrading. You need to flash the unit to an earlier revision with a different tool if you want to read UHD discs with this if your unit came loaded with the v3.03 firmware. I'm docking a star for this since units manufactured earlier in the year had no problems with this. 4UPDATE 2: Down to 2-stars due to poor DVD reads Jul 2019 update: I am sick of the read errors from DVDs. New, scratch-free discs still get random read errors and I have to put them in a different DVD drive on my PC. EVERY ONE that I've had to do this for has read fine on the other drive(s). The ASUS drive has had ZERO problems with blu-ray discs but those are maybe 1/4 of my collection so I am constantly getting aggravated by this drive. I would recommend another brand if you want a BD and DVD drive.=====Dec 2018 update: Received my rebate in l;ate-summer after ASUS swtiched to new processing company. However, still average review because I keep getting read errors for DVDs from this drive. NEVER Have had a problem with Blu-rays but inconsistent reads of DVDs is irritating. I wouldn't buy this drive again nor recommend it.=====Blu-ray drive is average performer -- it has had reading problems in discs my other, older drive reads fine. The real problem is ASUS does not honor their rebate offers. I submitted and had my rebate approved in March 2018 ("4-6 weeks to process and send rebate"). Waited until June 2018 to phone and a real person apologized and promised to check into the problem and I "should get my rebate in 10-14 business days." It's now August 2018 and ASUS hasn't done diddly except ignore my follow-up e-mail sent in July 2018. If your purchase is based on price after a rebate, then please rethink it. 24k Friendly - with some effort... The drive *does* rip 4k content (as seen here) but thanks to the manufacturer, and stupid content laws; law abiding owners are made to feel like criminals. This drive came to me through Amazon running 3.3 version of firmware which results in a no-go for ***ANY*** 4k content. Rolling back to 3.2 fixes this shortcoming but it is a task not for the faint-hearted.A quick search will reveal how to -"Roll-Back" the firmware to prior versions. Other than this drawback, the drive is up to Asus in quality and value; that is - very good! 4It Fried Had this drive for a few months and it was working great... then today as I was booting up the computer it fried. Looks like it shorted at the power connector or something. The power and SATA connectors plugged into the drive were totally melted, burned to a crisp. Burned some of the power and SATA cables in my computer and toasted one of the 4 hard drives I have in a RAID 10 setup. Smoked up the house pretty well too. Thankfully after replacing the burnt cables the computer still booted up on the remaining three drives. Now I just have to replace a hard drive, rebuild the array and get another Blu-Ray writer.I like ASUS products, my computer motherboard is ASUS. I was really surprised this drive went up in flames like it did. 1Blu Ray Burner This Blu Ray Burner Drive works perfectly. It reads all discs up to the latest high capacity Blu Ray Triple and Quad layer discs for 4k Blu Ray. All you need to play discs on this drive is the free Leawo Blu Ray Player Software. If you don't like subtitles and want menus available I would suggest you buy Cyberlink PowerDVD 16. Those two software programs are the best free Blu Ray player software and the best paid Blu Ray Player Software. According to toptenreview.com. I would use the free Star Burn disc burning software to burn all your discs. This software can even burn DVD/Blu Ray M-Discs and Blu Ray Triple and Quad layer 4k discs for free. 4quiet, fast, reliable I had used LG drives in the past years, but recently I needed a new bluray writer, and decided to go with Asus, the price was better. I must say I'm very impressed, and regret not having used Asus drives earlier. It's very quiet, on both reading and writing, incomparable to the noisy LGs. Secondly, it's fast. Thirdly it's of course reliable, and does what it's supposed to do. I've burned single (25G) and double layer (50G) BD discs with no problems, under Linux (xorriso). It also came region code free:# regionset /dev/sr0Current drive parameters for /dev/sr0: RPC Type: Phase II (Hardware) RPC Status: no region code set (bitmask=0xFF) Vendor may reset the RPC 4 times User is allowed change the region setting 5 timesI haven't tried it with BDXL yet (128G), but it does support it.It's retail package so it comes with some software too, but I can't comment on that since I'm on Linux.Strongly recommended, you can't do better than this on an internal bluray drive, and the price is unbeatable. 5Doesn't read 4K discs as described Buyer beware: the newer ones do not have the proper firmware which allows for 4K reading. In order to get it to do what its product description states, you have to downgrade the firmware to an older version, which Asus does not make easy. I haven't attempted it yet because I don't want to brick my device. It reads blurays and normal dvds fine, but that's not why I bought it. Not happy. 1No problems so far but... I have a old Pioneer BDR-205 that burns BR-R D/L discs at 10x the same media only burns at 8x on this drive. This is a faster-rated drive in every aspect but burns slower. Sure maybe it's just a media quirk but that is kind of lame that old tech is faster. My version shipped with FW 3.00, you are safe to upgrade to 3.02 if you will be using this drive for UHD. DO NOT UPGRADE TO FW 3.03+ or you will not be able to use this drive for UHD. 4Fast and Reliable I have to say that I am impressed with this Blu-Ray Writer. I have always only owned DVD Writers before and boy I am glad I upgraded. So now I can burn both DVD's and Blu-Rays with ease. Installation was a snap; windows immediately recognized the drive. To make this burner shine just pair it with good software. There are a lot of good DVD burning/creating software out there. I paired this writer with a 25 pack of Verbatim BD-R disks: Verbatim 97457 25 GB 6x Blu-ray Single Layer Recordable Disc BD-R, 25-Disc Spindle I like the drive because it is super fast and quiet. It does come with 4 megs of cache; I found that out when I used Nero to dig into the drives specs. Trust me you will be happy with this drive. It basically replaces the BW-14D1XT but you get more features at the same price point! Superb!! 5
