Customer Reviews

I recommend that you Download the device drivers instead of using the mini cd. The device works fine, however, I had problems with my computer with the initial installation.I followed the instructions.I Did NOT PLUG DEVICEI began to install drivers from mini cd.The installation stopped because it could not find the deviceI plugged in the device and restarted installing the drivers, the installation completed.I installed the software, using licence key from cd caseI went to device manager to check that drivers were correctly installed:I was able to capture video from my old Sony 8mm camera to my computer.HOWEVER, WHEN I RESTARTED MY COMPUTER LATER IT WOULD NOT BOOT PAST THE SPLASH SCREEN.After an hour of trouble shooting, clearing the cmos, etc. I decided to unplug all usb devices thinking that the new device drivers were causing the problems. I was now able to boot into Windows 10. I had to uninstall the device drivers in order to boot the computer with usb peripherals connected.I went online and downloaded drivers from their website. I was now able to boot the computer properly and use the device. It captured the video well. The software is great for capture, however, it is limited . I used other software to edit the video and create a dvd. 4Does the job, but software lacks in features First, instead of receiving an "August" branded capture device like in the picture, I received an "EasyCap" device. Probably not much of a difference, but might be important to some. The device itself installed fine on my Windows 8 desktop using the included disc. However, the capture/editing software (Honestech VHS to DVD) did not seem to have an activation key. Turns out it resides *on the disc* itself, in a file called SN.txt. Be sure to look there if you can't find the key physically included. The software is decent, allowing you to at least adjust the quality/pixel size of the recording, and letting you crop / add transitions to the result. It is lacking in many features however, such as audio input volume control and the ability to compress to common file formats (like .wmv, .mp4, etc.) By default, it captures in .MPEG, and can stitch together those clips to a raw .AVI file. After capturing/converting to .AVI I use different software (Adobe Premiere) to export in the file formats I need.Over the past month I've done about 30 or so tape conversions to 720x480 video thus far, with minimal error. Are there better options to choose? Maybe, but as long as this continues to work I'm perfectly satisfied. 4Very disappointed This product started out looking like it was going to work well. We were trying to take a signal from a video camera and use it to stream our worship services. It was clunky, but it seemed like it was working. However, when we purchased a dedicated desktop computer to use with it, we could never get the capture device to show up. And when I went back to my laptop, on which it originally worked okay, it didn't work on it either after that. Unfortunately, I did not purchase any of the extra warranty, and this only came with 90 days, so I am stuck with a non-working device. A waste of money, but a lesson learned. 1Works great This is a great tool. It worked on both Windows 10 and Windows 7. Windows 10 does need a few extra steps.Go ahead and disregard the papers included in the package. Download the software through the website. It includes both the drivers and the newer software (not Arcsoft). You can plug in the device first, and then install the software. This worked for my 8mm Sony Camcorder.Windows 10 - You can search for a tutorial install video. Follow the video, and you'll see what settings you need to switch on in order to get this device working. As of this review in Win 10 you cannot view video's on the screen with the software but you can and do still record them.Windows 7 - You don't have any settings to switch on. It's very straightforward plug in, install software and you're ready to go. You can see video in this OS. 5awesome capture device for aforadable price The device is awesome, especially if we take in an account the price. Of course there was a little frustration from the beginning when I cannot manage to make it work (even thought it does not work). Please read my tips if you want to save the time:1) Install software and driver first and only after insert it to any USB port2) The SN of the software is on CD case (tiny hard to notice sticker)3) When you run program and switch to video capture mode, play with settingsa) I was surprised to get audio from serial input, instead of USB2 audio capture deviceb) check device settings (within capture program) and play with different decoders to select the right one (NTSC worked for my case).5) If you get error message that device is in use, you have two options:a) restart windowsb) disable/enable device from device managerI hope my tips will save your time!p.s. I personally needed it to connect Xbox to my laptop as I do not have/use TV at all 5Product Just Does NOT Work! I have ordered many items from Amazon with great success. All have worked as promoted. Except this one. I gave it one star because there are no negitive stars availalbe. This product, even using DL'd drivers and software did not work. To top it off, the software key on disk did not work. Save yhour money, get a different unit! Or you probably will return it as I did. With Amazon's assistance, I replaced this with the Top-Longer USB 2.0 VHS to DVD unit and it is working flawlessly. Dirvers install and so does the software. I tried a sample VHS record and audio was clear and video was good. (This is from a 20/30 year old tape).David A. Marks 1Product works after dabbling with it- Video capture and edit SW is not for the faint hearted! I read all the negative reviews of this product with listed issues. Guess what, I got everyone of these problems! The fundamental problem with the product is there is no user's manual that gives you guidance to deal what seem to be common problems that everyone faces. The manual that was shipped with the product is a skimpy installation manual! If you are not patient or have sufficient dexterity, this product will be difficult for you.At any rate, here are the listed problems (I have seen each on!) and the recommended action:1-"Device busy or not available": This does not happen all the time but the fix is as follows. Unplug the USB converter, push refresh button and it will display the computer built in camera output. Now plug the device back, push refresh and select the capture device2-" Material is copyrighted": It appears in some tapes sometime more than once. Stop capture when the message appears and restart again. At the end of capturing all the tape segments (this problem may occur more than once in one tape), merge all the files in one using MPG-2 (default capture compression)3- No Audio: Must select the incomprehensible selection "Audio Pin Source" whatever that means4- No Video: Must select the appropriate video standard under "Device Setting". In North America it is NTSC-M-J.The real work occurs after capture to merge (project), convert into the appropriate standards and produce (DVD, etc. The "raw" files are huge MPEG-2 high quality (1.2 MB/s, almost 4-5 GB per hour). I am still experimenting with the compression choices but it appears that WMV (Microsoft video compressor) may be the most efficient. 4Works Great with easy Fixes This was the cheapest one I could fine. Set up was easy, had 2 problems will list it and the fix, I am using windows 10, 64 bit proProblem 11. Driver installation - instructions said to install the driver then plug in the device (this is actually the most common practice on usb devices) but when I tried to install the drivers the program errored out. I then plugged in the device then ran the driver installation, worked like it should2. Sound/Device in use - A common problem you will first see is an error saying something like "device in use" and people listed fixes but I will explain a real fix and the root cause. When you install the device it uses you sound card, the speakers AND mic. The problem lies in the mic, you windows will switch it to your default mic so the device can't use it to record sound because windows hijacked it.The Fix. Open up sound properties (Right click windows icon) select control panel>Hardware and Sound>sound (or type "sound" in the search. Select the "recording tab" right click on the VGB100 and select "disable" . This will stop windows from using the device gain when you unplug and plug the USB back in.The software with the device is easy to use, the only thing I wish I could do is set a record time. I have started recording a 6hr tape only to forget about it and let it record 18 hours making a 25 gig video file. I easily fixed this but I bet slower computers would have trouble handling that. If you plan on recording something long, set an alarm! 5Doesn't capture older devices properly, S-Video does not work at all If you try to connect a gaming console that is a Super Nintendo / Sega Genesis or older, this capture card fails to sync the video signal properly and discolors the entire thing. Pictures show the same signal through the provided software, and then plugged into a regular CRT TV. Consoles newer than that, like the N64, or Dreamcast, capture okay. No one that I've talked to that owns other capture cards has this problem, or knows why it's happening on the August VGB100.Also, the S-Video cable just doesn't work at all with anything I try it on. I move the s-video plug from a TV that takes S-Video and is working as expected, to the August VGB and get no signal, even when deactivating and reactivating the capture with the signal active. So, it captures a relatively small range of consoles that are old enough to still use standard def composite, but not too old so as to throw the signal out of sync. Probably worth $3, not $30. 2Wouldn't work using Windows 10 Installed seemed to work correctly but when I opened the program the only video capture I could obtain was through the computer's webcam. It wouldn't recognize the adapter. I'm not a computer expert but I am proficient enough to realize it was most likely not recognizing a driver. Went to website and downloaded driver but still wouldn't recognize. Called the tech support toll free number and they informed me that they (VIDBOX) acquired honestech corp a long time ago and no longer support their products. Tech support told me I needed to purchase VIDBOX 8.0 or higher for latest. I'll gladly spend the 79.00 to avoid this headache again. 1
