Customer Reviews

100% EXCELLENT PRODUCT!!! I only wish that I had purchased this to begin with instead of the garbage that's sold in the big box stores. Extremely well made and quality throughout. While I have no way of knowing how it will stand up to abuse, the steel used is so much more substantial that I'm pretty sure it will survive just fine. The flag is NOT some cheap metal either and is also excellent. The attaching screws are stainless steel which is nice. When quality goes into a product like this I don't mind paying a higher price. Regardless of vandals or not this is the way to go. 5A Quality Product Ruggedly fabricated from powder-coated heavy gauge steel this rural mail box is well worth its premium price. The magnetic latch is simple and holds the door firmly in the closed position. The flag is also sturdy. Its size is a bit larger than what I think is "standard" for a USPS home mail box. Both big box hardware stores in my area offered mostly cheap plastic junk in a similar sized mail box. A local hardware store stocked the Gibraltar line, but their price was over 30 bucks more than Amazon. If I recall correctly, with Prime, 2-day shipping was free. I was hoping it would be US made, but its origin is Taiwan. 5Sturdy well made box I got this 2 years ago after my original mail box was having problems (flag wouldn't stay up and door often fell open). This one was one of the HOA approved replacements. My teenage son installed it on our existing post. You can see the old box (my neighbor's) on the right and this one on the left. It has a magnetic closure when the door is shut. The door feels heavier and not flimsy like the old one. On occasion the mailman doesn't close it properly if he's in a rush because you do have to make sure it clicks (the magnet). However, I complained to the post office and this doesn't happen anymore. The flag is sturdier as well. My old mailbox lasted about13 years. I think this one will last longer. 5Can't Keep a Good Mailbox Down I had this mailbox for four years and loved it; it was ripped off its post, beaten on, egged (ewww), and hit with a plow, and it barely had much more than a scratch, other than a major bend in the door from some determined crazy person wailing on it (we were able to bend it back, with some serious effort, and it was hardly the worse for wear).Did I mention that I hate the kids in our neighborhood? (At least, I hope it's kids; if it's adults, that's even more pathetic.)Anyway, I will sadly have to replace it now--but not because it finally became too damaged, oh no. I have to replace it because the neighborhood vandals decided to progress from mere vandalism (bad enough) to theft. (Not just us, naturally; multiple houses were hit.) Mailbox vandals are a special, particularly sad and hopeless kind of scum. But the fact that the mailbox needs to be replaced is no fault of its own, in short. It did its job admirably! 5It is real nice and beefy Beastly mailbox! I just purchased this after my mailbox got smashed. It is real nice and beefy, and looks good to boot. I'd wager the next "Mailbox Babe Ruth" will be in for a funny suprise. I picture them vibrating like a classic Looney Tunes character after smacking this thing. One really nice thing I noticed about the one I received, compared to some of the ones pictures, is the fact that it is powder coated on the inside as well as the outside. Hopefully that will end the rust issues some other reviewers have had. 5This thing doesn't mess around I know, it's a bit expensive for a basic steel mailbox, but I was tired of my old, cheap, thin-wall mailbox rusting, getting dented, and having its door and flag fall off. I have only had this for a few months, but I feel like it will last a lifetime, and it will almost certainly last longer than the old wooden post I have it mounted on. Hopefully the last mailbox I will ever buy.The other mailboxes in the neighborhood are scared and intimidated, but I have promised them that mine is not aggressive and will only attack if provoked. Fair warning has been given. 5Hit by a car and still standing strong I live on a busy street and anticipated there would be some dumb-dumbs on the road when shopping for mailboxes. Well, I was right and my mailbox was hit by a car and knocked into the street this spring. I had to bend the bottom of the corner outward with pliers so the door would open again, and replace the knob that was broken off (with a spare kitchen cabinet knob I had lying around), which took all of 5 minutes and required no additional money spent.Frustrating as the experience was, I was glad I invested in this sturdy mailbox, meaning a full replacement wasn't necessary. 5Absolutely great with one improvement & one flaw Add my kudos to all the others. This is a well made, brick-sh*t-house tough mailbox. Only the cheesy plastic knob detracts. So I replaced it with my own custom made Schedule 40 PVC one (photo). Updated review (5-26-19). The box has several vent holes which, in very wet & windy environments will admit moisture into the mail box and dampen (and occasionally even soak) your mail. 4Heavy steel vandal-resistant mailbox I installed one of these Gibraltar heavy duty steel boxes about 5 years ago to thwart vandalism and have been satisfied. But the hinge rusted rusted out recently, and after looking at prices and reviews of other sturdy boxes, I decided to buy the same Gibraltar box again. I have a vertical 4x4 post for mounting, so I also got the Architectural Mailboxes 7540B-10 Mailbox Adapter Plate, which attaches to the bottom of this box with four thick bolts. The mounting holes in the box were slightly small for the adapter plate's bolts, so I enlarged them slightly. There were no directions for attaching the metal flag and its "stop" with the included screws, nuts, and washers. But in order, from the outside inwards, the top screw for the flag first holds a thin plastic washer, the metal flag, a thick plastic washer (fatter side in), (mailbox wall), metal washer, locknut. On the lower screw for the "stop": the skinny tubular washer, (mailbox wall), metal washer, then locknut. I assume this box will eventually also rust out, since it's steel and exposed to the elements. The door hinge seems to be the most vulnerable part, but this time I will try to fix any rusty spots before they do much damage. Despite this disadvantage of a steel box, it's worth it to have a box that's hard to vandalize. 4Rock Solid In looking for mailboxes this one stood out. At first glance I thought " this thing is built like a tank " and my impression was - isn't that ridiculous? In further shopping of other company"s products I kept seeing how the finish would fail, rust would appear, doors wouldn't close, door fell open or fell off. I came upon this mailbox again and thought "It's built like a tank! piano hinge instead of two rivets punched through thin metal for the hinge, 20 gauge steel, not flimsy metal or non-rusting-but-flimsy plastic that fades in the sunlight. This is the one! And it is, I bought two for my neighbor and I and the things are HEAVY, solid, the door slams shut like a '52 Cadillac. This is half the price of a certain company sold here with far better reviews. Yes, its also twice the cost of other mailboxes. You don't always get what you pay for, but if solid and sturdy is what you seek over fancy styling, this Spartan warrior of a mailbox is what you seek. 5
