Customer Reviews

The right balance of security, ease of use, and cost of ownership Here's a short quiz. You believe one of your keys has gotten loose and someone with knowledge of you home or business now has a key you never authorized them to have. Choose the most correct answer. You:1. Launch an investigation, perhaps hire a PI in an effort to prove ths person has the key. You turn the investigation over to the police.2. Hire a locksmith, probably for the second or third time, to Rekey the structure at say $25 per cylinder.3. You had the foresight to install Kwikset Smartkey door and padlocks. You spend maybe ten minutes rekeying your locks. Problem solved. Just for kicks you take to doing this at random times just to be safe. It's noteworthy that Kwikset makes a pretty good, lock but in terms of specs it's certainly not the best. But this lock is security you will use. It's not an arm and a leg Medeco, but I suspect if you needed that you would have already been instructed by your insurance carrier or the government to use them. Now installed you would be absorbing the costs of owning the very best and losing sleep over the complexities. These Kwikset locks pay for themselves the second time you Rekey them. They put you in charge. Ya, I knew it. Control freak.Do yourself a favor: Get their lock? Your going to love it. 5SmartKey compatibility in a padlock, but can't leave open without the key My title pretty much sums it up.Having refitted my house with SmartKey lock sets, I was happy to find this product because I have one outdoor thing that I want to keep secured most of the time with a padlock, and liked the ability to have my house key usable for it as well. Unfortunately, I don't want to keep that item padlocked all the time, so I used to leave my old padlock hanging on the hasp unlocked some of the time for convenience. Unfortunately that is not possible with this padlock, because you can't remove the key when it is unlocked. If that doesn't affect you, this is a great product. 4Heavy, keys captive while open, love the smark key feature Product is heavy compared to most other locks. We love the smart key feature to rekey this when we repurpose the lock. The keys stay captive while the shackle is open which we have mixed feelings about, and sometimes find a bit annoying to have our keys left dangling from the lock while we try to remove the lock from a container/door. Also, unlike a smart key doorknob where the cylinder can be reset if the key learning fails (which we ve luckily have not yet happen) it seems the padlock can t be rest the same way so we assume if we ever mess up the learning we ll need to replace the lock. 4Great value good quality lock The best part about all kwikset is that you can set the locks to all use the same key. I get that's the point of kwikset, but honestly it is really nice to not have to worry about where is the back padlock key, where is the room key. where is the house key.Additionally this lock is really quite hefty and we use it to lock our fence from the inside. This is about the same size and shape as a typical master lock just with the added convenience of not having to store a spare key somewhere. After being outside most of the winter and spring there is no rust and it is still an easy to unlock lock. 5Read the instructions to rekey. The lock was a bit larger, and heftier then I was expecting. This was a happy surprise. If you are rekeying the lock to your house key, make sure you read the instructions. The procedure is slightly different then rekeying a house lock. The main things is you need to lock the padlock after you have inserted the new key before you can turn the key. There is also a warning about locking the lock before inserting the new key. Doing this will make the lock unusable, as it will no longer be keyed to the old key, but will not have been keyed to the new key. 5I love the smart key door systems I love the smart key door systems, but had a terrible experience with the padlocks. After rekeying, several padlocks worked a couple times, then all of a sudden wouldn't work with the new key. Had to be cut off, expensive and difficult. Really disappointed. 1POS (Am I supposed to give 2 stars for a bad product as Amazon ditches 1-star reviews?) I bought a bunch of these and have unfortunately experienced a 1 in 2 failure rate. Rekeying works okay (but only okay) in the door locks, not so with the padlocks. I'm thinking the problems are due to just junky China manufacture. On five the key turned poorly (even with rekeying to the same key) and on two of these then not at all. One was locking a job box with a covered shackle leaving me stuck and pissed that I didn't replace it with a regular good padlock at the first sign of problems. But this might be the most interesting part. Having no choice I undertook a physical attack to open it. I have no skills or knowledge of such things and I was shocked to find it took 10 seconds before the lock popped open (I will not detail what I did but it was nothing special). 1The future of the padlock. I've been a padlock collector for years and I also keep an eye on trends with regard to the padlock. In 2007 Kwikset came out with its Smartkey technology for door locks. This technology was revolutionary in that this lock could be rekeyed without removing it from the door; it is also bump proof and highly pick resistant. There are issues with this lock (it can be forced if one knows how to do it) but for the price it's an amazing lock. But for all that, a padlock lock wasn't available. I wasn't surprised. When Linus Yale invented the pin tumbler cylinder (another revolutionary leap for the mechanical lock) it would be approximately ten years before a pin tumbler padlock appeared. So I knew I was in for a wait. But finally someone at Kwikset figured out that perhaps this technology would also be suited to the padlock (I wrote them a number of times explaining that they were sitting on something that would transform the padlock and their only response was to say that they weren't interested in making a padlock at this time). In fact, it's not only appropriate, I easily predict that within a decade the smartkey cylinder will be in most higher end padlocks. Imagine being able to rekey your padlock on a job site without removing the cylinder. You can loan a key out and when that phase of the operation is through, simply rekey the lock without having to worry whether the guy you lent the key to made duplicates. And again, for the price, it cannot be beat (compare it with the cost of an Abloy or a Medeco or a Schlage Primus). The closest product to this that's on the market today is the Sesamee combination lock (because it also can be "rekeyed"); and though it too is a fine padlock it isn't as sturdy as this lock. In addition, there's been some problems with the Sesamee lock "forgetting" its combination. So I take my hat off to the execs at Kwikset for finally bringing out this product; and though you guys were a little slow to recognize that the smartkey technology was even more appropriate for the padlock than it was for the door lock--because the padlock is more versatile--better late than never. 5a little awkward for multiple lock boxes Seems well made...nicer than another common padlock manufacturer. I bought these for my Knack jobsite box..which they are too big for without first removing the gray plastic part, which pushes off with a little effort. The keys are non removeable while the lock is opened. so you have to work one side of a gangbox at a time, taking advantage of the flexibility in the lid to remove the catch from the shackle so only the padlock gets re-locked before moving to the other lock. It's easy to do with a little practice. 4Fantastic! If you like all of your door knob locks keyed alike, then you already know about and love kwikset smart key locks. Now you can get your padlocks keyed to your house key or any other key also. Kwikset smart key locks are fantastic and there is even a video on youtube demonstrating how these locks won't fail using a bump key method used to defeat locks. Now one key for everything! 5
