Customer Reviews

Lutron Dimmer is bulletproof & performs as advertised! Vacillated between Leviton & Lutron but in the end went with the bulletproof Lutron name and whiter color of the paddles. The included companion switch in this package was nice to have necessitating only 1 more companion switch to be purchased for my 4 way configuration.Install was straight forward once I figured out what my traveler's wire were in a 4 way setup.Best parts of this digital dimmer are the linear dimming up & down; And the last dimmer setting is pulled back up when you click on.Oh & Lutron customer service help line is always available to walk me through things: like when I moved my 4 way locations.Overall - am very happy with this purchase & install.PS- I went with Eaton (aka Cooper Lighting) face plates even though they don't match exactly the Lutron white. 5A fantastic product but you will have to chase for the basic documentation. This dimmer kit is awesome even though the included documentation is very confusing hence the 1 star drop. I wasted so much time trying to figure out why the companion would not hold the light on just to re-read and see that it mislead me in the programming steps. I think that the documentation should mainly focus on the kit contained into the package rather than on hypothetical setups. That being said, I could enjoy having the control of my lights from two locations as the previous setup was not working this way.One major downside is the included very confusing documentation from Lutron and the lack thereof to program it. Standard electrical schematic should include Live, neutral and earth indication which are all missing in the included doc.I had to search for programming documentation on Lutron's website to learn how to use it as I read in the product description that this product could switch the lights on gradually without blinding you. It is such a shame this doc is not included. Another cons is the "fade on" feature does not work when double taping, it goes straight to full power... I wish it could "fade on" on double tap as well. I am currently using Philips LED Dimmable BR30 Light Bulb and they work very well with no buzz/flicker at all even at minimum power. 4Check you leds for compatibility first...or spend endless time pulling your hairs... Beware that these would work only with specific LED light/trims , which are listed on their website.Of course if you get the top rated LED trims from Amazon - they don't work. The ones they have listed are older models and 99% of them have no picture listed, so you have to search them one by one.Extremely annoyed by this. Their tech support basically just said if my led lights are not listed on their website, they won't even discuss my problems. If you are using very efficient LEDs and only 2-4 lights - the load might not be enough and the switch doesn't operate properly... 1Work but required some programming The kit includes one Maestro dimmer switch and a one Companion dimmer switch. Installation guide is correct but confusing when compared to other documents on Lutron website such as application notes and product specification. Installation guide also did not have a section on FASS slider which I thought is an big miss since FASS is very important in installation and programming of the switch. It seems getting the Maestro and the Companion dimmer switches to replace existing 3 way switches and work nicely together required some electrical knowledge and programming knowledge. The Maestro switch is like a micro computer that after power failure requires some boot up time before getting to normal response state. For example, after a power shut down, I tap the big button once and my LED lights flicker anywhere from 3 seconds to 2 minutes depended on whether I panicked and tap the big button a few more times or press on it too long. It is as though it went through some self calibration to determine whether the Companion switch is being used or a mechanical 3 way switch is being used; or as though it is stuck in the APM (Advanced Programming Mode) and takes a minute of no button touching to time out and exit APM. In other words, the Maestro dimmer set works but it can be complicated and non-intuitive for typical user using their factory default setting. Most of my problems are solved after I download the application note # 459 - Maestro C L Advanced Programming Mode on the website, [...]. I read the 17 page APM note #459 and went through the programming to configure all options from option IL1 to IL7. The key is to set option IL1 (Preset Light Level) to Locked Preset of level 5 (IL5 led lighted up) so that every time I tap the big button, it either turns on to a preset light level or turn off. This stops the Maestro switch from trying to find the last memory setting to turn on to and then keeps flickering for a while (because after a power shutdown or programmed factory reset, last memory setting is empty) until either jump to full brightness or lowest dim level brightness. The physical configuration is not intuitive. Big button is for turn on, turn off, and APM entry purposes when tap and for delay turn off when press and hold. Small side rocker levels are used for lower or raise light level and APM mode selection purposes. Normal use for the big button would be tap once to turn on or turn off, press and hold 2 seconds (or till IL led indicator lights up and show where delay setting is set at), and tap twice to turn on at full intensity (which rarely work unless you can get the double tap rhythm perfectly right). Lutron should have put some permanent labeling on the big button as ON/OFF and the rocker as DIMMED.On my installation, the Companion dimmer switch is powered through the Black screw (black wire - HOT) and the Maestro dimmer switch is powered through the Brass screw. I think the Blue screw is used for communication between the Maestro switch and its Companion switches (up to 9). In my case, the Maestro switch controls the LED lights through how its black wire powers the black wires of the LED lights. When use with Companion dimmer switch, default setting is .75 second to turn on LED lights and 2.5 second to turn off LED lights. Therefore one should not panicked and must resist the temptation of repeat button pressing if one taps a button and nothing happen right away. From reading the download Lutron documentation, if only mechanical switch is used with Maestro for 3 ways, turn on time is immediate, ~ 0 second.Although I am impressed with the fact that the Maestro switch is a physical work of art and a micro-computer in disguise (17 page programming guide), I took one star off because the kit did not work as normal expected 100 percent after proper installation due to the complicated and conflicting information on the installation guide. It should have been easier and should have work right of the box. 4Lutron Needs to Provide an Updated List of Compatible Bulbs I originally purchased these for Progress LED fixtures I'd already installed that claimed they were dimmable. They flickered horribly even after repeatedly performing Lutron's sequence of steps to try to eliminate the flickering. Thankfully I was able to return the fixtures and purchased bulb-less fixtures with the intent of purchasing LED bulbs from Lutron's extensive list of compatible bulbs. That proved much harder than anticipated considering the four-plus pages of LED bulbs listed for my dimmer model. Searches though the web sites of the big box home improvement retailers, as well as on Amazon resulted in only a few available bulbs to choose from. The problem may be at least partially due to Lutron's online list last having been updated on August 4, 2015. (There's another link available at the URL below that indicates it's for the most up-to-date list, but all I found following that trail was another link back to the 2015 list.) Hopefully the LED bulbs that are being shipped will work better than the Progress fixtures did. Meantime, I have good ol' incandescent bulbs installed that dim beautifully, but aren't affording me the energy savings I was hoping to achieve.[...] 3Easy solution for multiple dimmers With traditional mechanical dimmers, it's not practical to use them in multiple locations for three way switches. With traditional three way switches, if you need another location added (i.e. more than two switches), you will need a four way switch. These dimmers are designed for up to 10 locations. However, the included instructions don't go into how to wire them for new locations, or how to replace a four way switch with a companion dimmer. The instructions indicate that a companion dimmer instruction sheet is available, presumably on their website.Installing these is about as easy as for traditional three way switches. But these have a grounding wire that your original switch might not have had. If you don't have a ground wire, you can cap the green wire with an included cap. That's allowable under the electric code because the switch plate has no external screws (i.e. meets "no metal screws" requirement.) The switch plate is also more attractive than a traditional one, and if you need to replace something in a two gang or multi-gang box, the available Lutron plates can make installation a lot easier for that reason and for other reasons too. These dimmer switches are easy to use, turn on or off with a single press, and remember the last setting. Dimming is easy from either switch, but only one switch has a row of green lights showing the percentage dimmed. In my case, that's not a problem for two reasons. I can see the other switch across the room, but more importantly I can tell whether the lights are as bright or dim as I want them. There is also a small slide out piece under each switch to lock things in the off position. When the lights are turned off or on, they either fade off or on. It's relatively quick but there's no sudden change from on to off. With dimmable CFLs I imagine it wouldn't make much difference, but with LEDs it's a nice effect. The dimmable range can be adjusted so there's a threshold for the minimum amount the lights can be dimmed. The only problem I have is that once I installed these, I started hearing a hum from every light fixture. The hum was not there before. But I read reviews of those particular lights and many reviewers commented that they hum. So perhaps it's a fault of the lights, or the lights would do that with any dimmer. I can't really tell but if I were to buy them now, I'd check any negative reviews to see if others have the same problem. 4Does what it is supposed to, interesting features Installed per instructions, which went fine. Connected three S9620 BR LED Warm White bulbs. An interesting features that I didn't see in the instruction manual: Double click the large button to instantly bring the lights up to maximum brightness. The slow fade-out is a little gimmicky. It is possible to program how dim the dimmest setting is, so you can tune it to the point where your LED bulbs just barely turn on.If you hold your ear up to it without the wall plate, there is a definite high-pitched (mosquito noise) whine, but it is not normally noticeable. 5So far excellent. Install was easy, just follow the simple directions and your done. Only thing I found and it's not the fault of the Lutron switch, it's basically electronic 3-way switches. Even when they are turned off, there is always some minimal voltage still going out to the lights. In this case it was around 35 volts, another electronic 3-way that I tried, had 25 volts going out to the lights. If your using LED bulbs, due to their inherent energy efficiency, once you turn the switch off you may find you lights are still lit. But it is so minimal that you probably won't notice it until it is very dark in the room. But in that case, I feel your defeating your energy savings, by having lights that are actually on, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The bulbs I had in my kitchen were Sunco dimmable BR30's, which I never had an issue with, but would still be lit after turning the switches off, not just these Lutron's but also a set of Top Greener. In the case of Top Greener they had no idea what to do to fix this issue, other than send the switches back to them, or put an incandescent bulb in place of one of the LED's. Now with the Lutron they have compatible bulbs they recommend for their switches, the ones I picked were Philp's BR30's, readily available at Home Depot and because our local energy company applies an immediate rebate, 3 bulbs were selling for $7.45, pretty cheap. Installed them and after it had been dark for sometime, turned any other lights off that might take away from the darkness and no issue, they didn't glow at all.Actually appears as though the Philips, must have a built in switch, so when they reach a certain voltage it opens the switch inside the bulb, turning them off completely. Then can be dimmed down to a very low lighting effect, but once you turn them off, they dim down to a point then just go out instantly. As with the Sunco, they would dim down all the way to nothing, but never really go out completely. So if you plan on installing an electronic dimmer on LED's look for compatible bulbs. 5Great value kit for dual location dimming. Great value kit for dual location dimming. My only issue with this kit was that I bought it to control LED recessed lights and was unable to do so without buzzing. I kept the companion dimmer (MA-R) but swapped the main unit (MACL-153M) for an ELV unit, which greatly reduced the issue. I'd recommend carefully researching your particular lighting application and electrical set up to make sure this works best. Otherwise a fantastic set with loads of functional options to control your lights. Quality Lutron as usual. 43 way dimmer switch gives a nice touch to the ambience Installed this pair of dimmer switches with 2 ceiling recessed lights running BR30 LED bulbs (11W) SYLVANIA Ultra LED Light Bulb dimmable 11W Replacing 65W Halogen BR30 / Medium Base E26 / 2700K -warm white with 12/3 Romex wiring. I plan to add 4 more recessed lights later for a total of 66W load. Dimming works very well at default settings. At the dimmest setting, there was a noticable delay (more than 1 second) between the turn on time of the two lights. As I increase the intensity, the delay gets smaller. At the brightest setting, the delay is still perceivable but not annoying, probably like 100ms. Interestingly, depending on which way the circuit is connected (either the blue screw is hot or the brass screw is hot), the delayed light was a different one. It doesn't make any sense because the second light is downstream from the first light in both cases. It could be a light bulb variation issue. The Black screws are the Common terminals in the 2 way switches. The wiring in my case is as follows:1. at the Master switch - power source Black (Hot) wire goes to Black screw. For the 12/3 Romex wire, Red wire (traveler) goes to Blue screw, Black wire (traveler) goes to Brass screw. Tie the 2 White wires together (neutral). And of course ground wires are tied together.2. at the first recess light - White wire from master switch (neutral) goes to white wire on the light, and also white wire going to next light. Red wires from master and slave switches are tied together. Black wire from master (traveler) and White wire from slave (traveler) are tied together. Black wire from slave goes to black wire of light, and black wire of wiring to next light.3. at the Slave switch - Red wire goes to Blue screw, Black wire goes to Black screw, White wire goes to Brass screw. 5
