Customer Reviews

Dimming from multiple locations? Yes you can. I bought this with the MACL dimmer. The two talk to each other so you can dim from either location. Instructions say this works with up to 10 devices. Not sure this will do anything on its own or if it has to have a "parent" dimmer to control it. In any case, I just swapped a three-way dimmer and three-way switch with this and the Lutron MACL unit and it just worked. Would have been nice to have lights like the parent unit but then that would be more cost. 5Love em and they work. These are fantastic, however, I don't like that they only work with companion dimmers. You can't use regular 4-way switches inbetween the Master and Companion. Isn't clearly stated in the directions. Also, I blew out a master switch by accident. Needed to get it replaced. Wiring them up was the most difficult part. Being able too switch on 3 different sets of lights from 4 different areas required LOTS of wiring work. If I were rich, I would have paid someone to do it because it took me a month to get it done by myself on top of my day job and taking care of puppies. 5Full set required... It has been working flawlessly so far. The only thing on this product is that a set is required to have a 3-Way function to work correctly. The drawing with the main dimmer + reg 3-Way switch does not work. Through long research learned that it only works with its companion dimmer for 3-Way installation. So as a single dimmer it looks and works fine, but for 3-Way buy the set to avoid a headache. 5It's pretty simple. Identify the common wire (as indicated on ... Installed this companion switch (along with the Lutron 3-way switch) to control some LED recessed 'disk' lighting and have since been impressed. I had no issues with dimming or lights flickering. The instructions were a bit confusing because they showed multiple ways to wire a switch. It's pretty simple. Identify the common wire (as indicated on the old 3-way switches you remove) and install on the common wire screw of the new switches. No programming is required when using both a controller and companion switch. There are multiple videos on the internet to help explain this. Love how the light dims before turning off and how the switch returns to the neutral position. Beforehand I would constantly make sure both 3-way switches were in the down position when the light was off. 5Only works with Meastro master dimmer My local big box home center with the orange and black logo carries the 3 way master dimmers and master dimmer pack with companion dimmers. I had bought 2 3 way master dimmers at the store and thought they would work with a standard 3 way switch. They do not. So I went back to the store and by the time I got done explaining to the kid in the electrical department, I had ordered the two companion dimmers from Amazon on from my phone. What is great about the companion dimmers, is that now not only am I able to turn on and off the lights from two separate locations, I can now also dim lights from two separate locations. According to the directions, I can also add several companion dimmers to one master dimmer and therefore Dim from several locations. I don't need to do this, but if you're someone who has a really large room and would like to do this this is the perfect solution for you. I was a little nervous wiring these myself because they are digital technology and I fear if I wired it wrong I could blow either the master dimmer or the companion dimmer or both. But the wiring directions and the color coding on the companion dimmers made it super simple to wire. There is also a little "defeat switch" at the top or the bottom of the dimmer switch that when you pull it out it kills the circuit the whole thing. It's almost like shutting it off at the breaker. The dimmer switch system that Maestro produces is very sophisticated. when you turn the lights on tthe lights fade on and when you go to shut off the system the lights fade off. But honestly, if I would have known how much all of this is going to cost me from the beginning, I would've just used regular analog dimmers. (one regular three-way switch is like four or five dollars an the companion dimmer being 20. The master dimmer was 29 at the store, and a regular dimmer is 19) but it's great technology and In the end I am extremely satisfied. 5Can't find these in your local hardware store! I recently moved into a new home that had no dimmers installed on any lights. I visited my local hardware store in search of multi-location dimmer switches. The only true multi-location switch they had was the Lutron Maestro master switch. I bought two of them for one set of lights.Herein lies my first problem. None of the exterior packaging on the master switch said that you had to buy the companion switch for all but one location for the circuit. Unfortunately, none of the local hardware shops in town carried the companion switch because it didn't sell well (presumably because people didn't know they needed it!)Long story short: if you want true multi-location dimming capability, you MUST buy ONE of the Maestro master switches and the rest of the switches on that circuit must be THIS companion switch. ALSO worth mentioning is that this companion switch will work with any lights: incandescent, CFL, or LED, so long as the master switch is compatible with your lights. Now on to the review!I consider myself fairly electrically competent, at least enough to run new outlets and whatnot. Converting my old, 3 way non-dimming switch setup over to these 3-way dimmers was very simple since the package the switch comes in does include instructions for various scenarios. My advice to anyone wiring these switches is to pay attention when removing wires from your old switches so that you get it right on the first try. These switches look very nice and clean. I bought it in white; however they offer a multitude of colors to match your decor. The switch has a satisfying click when you tap the button, and it has a few nice features. For instance, you can double tap the button at any time to instantly raise the lights to max brightness. The switch remembers the last brightness setting you had so that when you turn the lights back on, it goes to that setting. Probably my favorite feature is the way the switch dims the lights on and off; it just looks so classy!Long story shot, I'm very happy with the Lutron Maestro series of switches. Since I moved in, I have replaced all my light switches in the house with the same style Lutron switches and I have had no failures. They all look sharp and have a clean, crisp feel when switching on and off. I would definitely recommend them! 5Need a replacement for defective product I love the products (Maestro Dimmer & Companion Dimmer), but of the two companion dimmers Lutron Maestro Companion Dimmer, Multi-location, MA-R-LA, Light Almond I most recently purchased (I've purchased & installed more than 5 of these), one was defective and won't function properly. I'd love to leave a 5 star review, but since I can't figure out how to get a replacement I'm hoping this less than favorable review will catch someone's attention! 3Works Perfectly This companion dimmer is required for multiple switch location controlling the same device (lights, receptacles, etc.) It works perfectly. Read the instructions carefully. The way this device works is that, basically, the three way and four way switches are replaced with the companions and a master dimmer is required in one location. If you don't care to dim from all locations, all that is needed is one master. The existing 3 way switch is reconfigured to work as a single pole switch. After figuring out what the technical document was actually about, the rest of the installation was easy. 5Once you go Maestro, you'll never go back. You just have to love the ability to control a single dimmer circuit from up to 10 locations .....I bought this as an extra dimmer controller as part of a project to upgrade a 4-way switch setup to a 4-way dimmer set-up - that means I can control a single dimmer circuit from 3 different locations, all adjusting the same dimmer setting in the same way. These are a clean simple design, quiet in operation but must be used with a Maestro master unit. There are no indicator LEDs on these companion units, sadly the LED indicators are on the Maestro master unit only (only one per setup permitted). My only word of caution is that once you make your first transition to full multi location dimming, you'll want to change every switch in your house. Finally, just for clarity, note that these units do not have wireless control or any other ability to be used in home automation systems, hence why their price is considerably less. 5Perfect for 2 or more switch locations. Need to use a Lutron MA switch as well. Works well replacing a 3way or 4way switch (2 or more switch locations) and want to dim at each location. My house had stairway/hallway lights that were only dimmable at the bottom of the stairs and had a on/off switch at the top. Invariably, it would be set too brightly at the bottom of the sairs and I'd light up the house in the middle of the night when getting up to check on something.I had 3 total switches and while the wiring was a little confusing (I can do 3-way switches in my sleep, but this was my first experience with 4-way wiring), follow the instructions carefully and you will be fine.Note - You NEED one Lutron MA digital dimmer as the master and can add as many companion switches (this unit) as you need. I suggest making sure you get one labeled CL (orange label on top of the box) which will work with LED/CFL bulbs. I used the Lutron CL Digital Dimmer MACLAMORE-153MR. 5
