Customer Reviews

Worked Very Well I do not know why the one reviewer said that these could not be mounted directly to the ceiling. That is nonsense. They have holes and include toggle bolts specifically for that purpose. I can only assume the reviewer was just clueless about installation or maybe his kit was missing parts. Even so, one can drill new holes and use your own screws as long as they have heads flat enough to clear the light head bases. Then there was the reviewer who could not get the lights to work but said some would work if the turned them around. Duuh, the tracks have two wires on one side and one on the other and you need to insert the heads so that the contacts line up!I had no problem with installation. I do recommend that you get at least one of the track mounting holes lined up with a ceiling joist if possible so you can use a real screw since that is stronger. Also, I used the LED lights that another reviewer suggested and they worked great with far less power usage. Be aware that if you use LED lights, you may want to avoid using the glass covers as most LED lights have vent holes that would be blocked by the glass covers. Just be sure the LED lights stay in well w/o the covers lest they wind up hanging by their wires. 4almost perfect... I've installed 8 of these tracks to replace flourescent tube lights with non-toxic energy saving LED bulbs. I tried the LED replacement tubes but they are expensive and the light is too blue (5000f). The Par 30 LED bulbs I use from Kobi Electric are about 3000f and cast a nice warm light; they're dim-able too. each bulb is twice the cost of this track light kit. The bulbs last a lifetime and draw 12 watts and are bright; they cast the light of a 75 watt bulb or more. I've mounted up to 5 cans on one of these tracks and they work fine. My hope is that some of these hard to reach locations will never need to be touched again in their lifetime. Some cautions: this track setup works fine but while the track is solidly built the light cans are flimsy and require some careful handling. Screw in the bulbs very precisely to be sure the bulbs are seated correctly and don't overrun their screw threads. Very Carefully. My most successful technique is to mount the bulb while the can is free (not mounted on the track yet) Hold the can so the track fitting is on top and the wide mouth is the lowest part. Insert the bulb 'up' into the light can and turn the can slowly while holding the bulb stationary. If you have any doubt about the bulb threads aligning with the can's threads; back out the bulb and try again. 3Installation of the actual tracks is pretty easy. Choice of screws (directly into wood) The actual kit comes ready to install in a ceiling electrical box. Instruction are NOT included if you do not want to install in the ceidling box. If you want to install without the ceiling box, you must purchase the SATCO "Live End Cord Kit" (item number TP156 (white) or TP157 (black). If you wish to add more than one track you will also need a SATCO "mini straight connector" (item number PT144 white or TP145 black) for each additional track. I ordered two tracks so I ordered the live end cord kit and one mini straight connector. Instructions for installation of both items are included with respective items. Installation of the actual tracks is pretty easy. Choice of screws (directly into wood), toggle bolts and anchors for the screws. You do have to attached the on/off switch to the cord if you use the live end cord kit. This items uses "longneck" bulbs. No where could I find out what bulbs to order so I called SATCO and they told me "regular" (whatever that is). I ordered the PAR 30 LED 14W dimmable bulbs that come wth two lenses. One is a 30 degree focused light and the other is a 120 degree dispersed flood light. Which is better? Don't really know until I turn them on this evening. What I do know is that it is easier to remove the attached 30 degree lense before installed the bulb into the socket. It is also easier to install the bulb if you remove the black "lip" and then reinstall the black "lip" when the bulb is installed. The black "lip" simply pulls out of the opening. Very easy!I'm not sure why people have a problem with installation. Installing the lights onto the track is very simply and straight forward (insert and twist 90 degrees). You do have to make sure that you have to two connector tabs will line up with the two copper lines when you rotate the light. At this point I am giving the lift 4 stars because I still need to add the additional 4 lights and will not know how bright the lights really are during the daytime. They are very, very bright when you look directly at the LED lights (much brighter than a 75W bulb). 4Blinking LED's & Not for Bedroom Kind of nice but somewhat industrial looking. We bought these for the bedroom and they just don't fit in.. They went up and worked fine..(see "blinking" below) but the size and black cords were just too much for a bedroom which is painted in soft blue. Be sure and check the sizes etc. before you buy these. They are as shown and described and of good quality and would be great in the right place.Blinking---I put LED bulbs in these lights and when we switched them off they blinked. Blink, blink.. couldn't live with that. Well it turned out that we had installed them with a lighted wall switch. A small amount of current runs through the wire to keep the switch lit. With most bulbs it's not a problem but LED's take so little current that it causes blinking. I put in a non-illuminated switch (the normal kind) and it solved the problem. The LED's worked just fine. 3Nice track, wacky packing and contents I bought a track, the gimbaled one, and it arrived and was perfect. Good instructions, nice parts pack. Everything perfect. So then I bought another of the exact same product. Box was a little roughed up and it was missing instructions and a few important parts (including the connector between the box and the track). I never would have known these were missing if I hadn't already received a complete set. So I returned the one with missing parts and ordered a third one. Perfect again. Now I'm back to order my fourth and fifth, hoping I get complete sets. To be honest though, these are worth the hassle. Great price, easy install, look very good, and once you understand how to twist the fixtures in and out ( push up or pull down the housing) these are very fast to put up. Took me and my 1 year old about 15 min, start to finish. 5You MUST know this before buying these track lights This is a fantastic track light for the price, but you've got to know a few things going in. Here they are1) This track comes with an endplate/cover for a ceiling box. If you're going to use a cord or conduit, you need to buy the adapter ends2) When you unpack it, there are ZERO instructions (which is why I'm writing this review)3) The light fixtures are a little strange in that the light bulb fits into a socket that's at the end of a cord, but the socket isn't attached to anything in the fixture itself. What happens is, you plug the bulb into the fixture, then you "snap" the bulb front into the fixture front (which pulls loose off of the fixture body) with a loose UV filter sandwiched between them. Holding everything together are some little metal clips. Then you push the whole socket/bulb/filter/fixture-front into the fixture base. The bulb mostly sits up against the glass but is loose on one side because there are 3 little clips, and 2 of them hold the bulb in (leaving the other third of the build to float away from the glass filter) and the other puts pressure on the fixture housing so the whole thing stays together. Needless to say this is a little wonky, and replacing bulbs seems like it'll be tricky not to have the UV filter fall out and shatter, but once together it's done.4) Bulbs are not included. The bulbs for this track light are 50Watt MR16's with the GU10 base. !!! GU10 BASE !!! don't get regular MR16's they won't work!5) In order to attach the endplate or cord, or conduit, you need to unscrew one of the end caps.6) The light fixtures are the kind that you stick in the middle of track and twist 90 degrees into place. Don't bother trying to slide them in from the ends. BUT!!! The square plastic base of the light fixtures has a "collar" that slides up. SO if you just try to twist them 90 degrees, two little black tabs will prevent you from success. You need to lift this collar (which is totally not obvious) then twist 90 degrees, then let the collar down and those 2 black tabs will sit in the center of the track channel. The point of the tabs is that when you twist your fixture to point the light the way you want it to point, you don't want to accidentally twist the whole fixture right off the track. These tabs keep the fixture locked in to the track, but let it rotate for pointing. So, that's it. At first I though these were really cheap and stupid, but in fact once you get over the hurdles I've outlined, they're still cheap (inexpensive) but look great.Enjoy! 5Great product: looks good, hardware is functional, installation is straightforward I bought 3 of the gimbal sets (9 lights total) for the bedroom. They seem just fine to me. They are much less expensive than some other brands, and although some reviewers found them flimsy, it would be a waste to make them stronger since they look fine and aren't likely to take a beating (usually they sit up high, and once mounted they'll be touched very seldom except for dusting and changing bulbs). The units came with instructions, which I essentially didn't read since the hardware is self-explanatory. The mounting hardware is included, for wood, brick/cement, or drywall. The units expect to be mounted over an existing electrical box (anywhere under the track).Securing the bulb to the gimbal was a bit tricky, at least initially. I used the popular Hyperikon 7W LED bulbs (http://a.co/9vcNczo), and their cooling fins make it harder to slide them in around the clips. A small screwdriver helps. After the first 5 or 6 bulbs I discovered a way of doing it with just my fingers. Remember to discard the round glass UV filters---they are not needed for LEDs and they'll hamper cooling. The normal range of light directions is from parallel to the wall (or ceiling) to 90 degrees (i.e. straight out). I wanted them to point slightly towards the wall for indirect illumination, and that is possible by unscrewing the gimbal ring about 1/4 inch, turning the ring over a stopper, and tightening it again. (Doing it is easier than explaining it.)There isn't really a lot more to know. The only snag I encountered (probably my fault for not reading the directions) was that I didn't push the lights down enough as I rotated them into the track, and a couple of them initially didn't make contact with the rail. This got me confused because I couldn't tell where the problem was. Eventually I narrowed it down with a voltmeter. 5Poorly constructed and engineered product In my lifetime I think I've installed maybe seven track lights. The technology and design seem to stay pretty consistent over the years, but this design by Nuvo is very different. From the images shown on Amazon, it would appear that the head unit is one piece, but it is in fact not. There is a bezel that fits around the lightbulb, and this forms the main support for the bulb. The electrical connection and base simply floats in midair. While I've got nothing against a different design approach, this one does not work well, and is quite frustrating to assemble. There is a clip that goes around the lightbulb to hold it in place, but a person needs to stretch it way beyond its native state. With the LED bulbs I'm using, the ends of the clip get caught in the cooling fins of the bulb, so you need to use a flat bladed screwdriver or similar to stretch the clip to avoid having the ends get caught in the fins. You just about need three hands to do this right. . I'm not sure if it's the fact I'm using LED bulbs or what, but it really doesn't appear the clip is designed to hold the bulb in place without a whole lot of finagling. Once I finally did get the clip around the bulb, it tends to push it off center. I guess the good news is with LED bulbs, and a 50,000 hour life at least you don't have to do this very often! So, if the goal was to make a simple process complicated, the engineers did an amazing job on this! As to the electrical, the plate that was supplied does not resemble the photos in the instructions.I have tried numerous configurations, and I cannot get this thing to stay flat with the ceiling surface. So, going to look for something from Home Depot or Lowe's to finish the job as what has in the past taken me maybe 30 min. is going to take hours. Really really horrible design. Do yourself a favor and buy a different manufacturers light. If I had not waited so long to install I would have returned this months ago. Super, super disappointed and extremely frustrated. I've been on a ladder four hours with a bad back struggling with this thing, so majorly disappointed. I have wired houses from service entrances to category 5 wires, so I know may way around electrical. It's not me!Overall, this is a really poorly constructed and engineered product, that makes what should be a simple process quite complicated. 1Even nicer in real life - and it uses GU10 bulbs, NOT MR16 as stated I had to actually buy one of these fixtures to confirm my suspicion: It uses GU10 bulbs (120 volt small bulbs with two knobby twist-lock feet), not MR16s (slightly smaller 12 volt bulbs that have two pins you push into the socket). But with that mis-labeling aside, this is a really nice fixture. The heads are quite solid, with real, nicely finished brushed steel. Much better than you'd normally expect in this price range. If you couple this with any of the multi-packs of LED bulbs that they have here on Amazon (2700k-3000k color temperature and a color rendering index (CRI) of 85 or more) for only a few bucks per bulb, you have a classy, super-efficient lifetime fixture. LEDs are so good these days, you never have to use power-wasting fire-hazard halogen bulbs again. After testing this first one, I just bought four more to finish out my newly-built retail space! 5Great price to quality ratio! Finally got the lights installed! It was a pretty seamless installation. As others have noted, some parts of it feel kind of cheap, but once installed, it looks really nice. My biggest complaint is the black cover for the wires, I wish it had a better way of tucking the wires away. I installed two lights in parallel and having the two covers next to each other doesn't really work because the cover isn't deep enough. I'm going to have to fabricated a cover to make it work for what I have. Overall I'm satisfied with how it looks after installation though! I'd say the quality to price ratio makes this a great buy. Also forgot to mention, as for the boxing of the product, I had no issues like other reviewers did. It arrived in good condition and all sealed up. Perhaps whoever the shipper is, they've finally fixed that issue. 4
