Customer Reviews

Great fo model building and fly fishing luresBought this as a gift for a neighbor passionate about plastic model building and fly fishing lures. An odd combo to me but we're both fellow veterans so we're a special breed apart from civilians (read as: a bit bent in the head but not stupid, just eccentric). Anyway, she finally got around to letting me know she's "lady gaga" about this device, whatever that means. Her husband approves greatly because at least she won't make him nervous spending time on the firing range. He says she's better off playing with her toys than planning for another Reserve re-enlistment. As for her, she brings over her latest Star Trek models and I break out my electronic Borg cube and we have simulated battles over pizza, beer, and a Trek film. I usually win.5The basic vise for any electronic hobbyist.Excellent smaller vise for small holding PCBs and other hobbies. There are a lot of nearly useless cheaper holders out there, but this is the where the starting point should be. You can add other PanaVise parts to it and expand its capabilities. It is acceptably stable as a stand alone base for soldering, but mounting it to a board or base ring would make it a solid fixture for heavier work. The vise comes with a knob "spinner" attachment that is not pictured here which makes it a lot easier to use. Fittings are very good and it should last a very long time. The plastic jaws are very useful, but over time careless solder burns might make it a replacement item. If you have been suffering by using the cheap "helping hands" grabbing fixture this will be a pleasant upgrade.5I should have got one a long time ago! After soldering and desoldering a few small PCB's and switches, particularly 3pdt switches, I got frustrated and ordered this. I should have picked it up back when I started doing electronics work and soldering! This vise is simple yet not too simple, I like it because there's less features to distract you and less components on the vise to get in the way. Open the jaws wide enough, using the speed wheel if needed, set your workpiece in the jaws, close the jaws, loosen the screw to tilt the vise if needed, tighten the screw, and you're all set! If the speed wheel gets in the way, slide it off. This vise strikes a good balance of simplicity and functionality in my book. I haven't abused it or had it for years, but I'm confident this is going to be a reliable staple in my tool arsenal!5This is the one for hobby / electronics work. The PanaVise is a big step up from the tiny "third hand" I was using - two swiveling alligator clips and a magnifier on a cast base. (That old one was OK for a year or two but it is small, easy to knock over, and the magnifier's attachment is wearing out even after very occasional use.) The PanaVise is heavy enough for light work just by itself but screwed to a breadboard, it's foolproof and still portable. The speed knob is pretty much essential and, though it's shown as an accessory, one was included with my vise. Nice touch, PanaVise! Curiously, the two jaws are grooved differently, one jaw having two grooves each direction, the other having only one in each direction. Two grooves in each direction would give a little more flexibility for mounting the printed circuit board and keeping the wheel out of the way when you're working near the same edge as the wheel. .review-image-thumbnail { background-position: center center; background-repeat: no-repeat; overflow: hidden; background-size: cover; height: 160px; width: 235px; } .review-media-gallery-content { height:100%; width:100%; background-color:black; } .reviews-mobile-media-gallery .a-carousel-viewport { margin-left:15px; } .cr-thumbnail-image { float: left; }5No Coarse Adjustment = No BuenoNot sure how a vise does not have coarse adjustment, especially when it says it does on the package. It does not. A wing nut is not coarse adjustment. I am sending this back asap. If you're doing multiple projects turning that knob would take forever to switch between pieces.UPDATE 2-6-2015 - I reluctantly ordered the Panavise 239 speed handle to help out with this issue. It has helped tremendously. That said - I would give this vise 5 stars IF it had been shipped with the Panavise 239 attachment for coarse and fine adjustment. The wing nut simply does not cut it, otherwise they would not have made this 239 speed handle. Seems ridiculous they dont include it.3Great Little ViceI'll start by saying my vice came with the Speed Control Handle. A nice surprise and I find it very useful. It isn't mentioned on the box or description here so don't expect it to be included. I got this vice to hold locks for picking. Looks like it is going to work just fine and is a fraction of the price of vices made for that purpose. The vice is more stable than I thought it would be and that's great. Works as is but I will get the Neoprene Pads for a better grip on smooth metal. Very pleased with this purchase.5Great value! Essential for holding rigid small irregular shapes.Within an hour of receiving this vise, I was using it. Specifically, I needed to roughen a small spot on several polished stones, and then glue a "bail" (a jewelry term -- who knew?) on the rough spot of each stone. This vise held the irregularly-shaped stones rigid so that I could grind a spot with a diamond burr and then glue on the bail. No way I could have done this with my regular bench-mounted vise. Great value at a great price!5Great, and came with a bonus! I use this little vise to hold printed circuit boards when soldering. It holds the boards securely without damaging them. The tilting and rotating ability lets me set the board exactly where I want it, and at the exact angle I want. I have a very limited work area, and the small size is perfect. It weighs 1.17 lbs and the base is wide enough that knocking it over would be nearly impossible. I've chosen not to mount it to my work table as I like the freedom of being able to move it from one place to another. This really is a great "third hand" for hobby projects. And the folks at PanaVise may be reading these reviews because my vise came with the Speed Control Handle included for free. I thought that was a nice touch. 5Works very well, and great heat-resistant plastic I bought this because I wanted something that did not have to be attached to the edge of the desk for being my "third hand" when soldering. This is ideal. The grips are hard plastic and do not melt when accidentally touched with the soldering iron. It has a wide adjustment range. The "spinner" for rapid adjustment (optional item) is a must, however. It also has an optional base with bins for parts, but I have not needed that. Much better than the alligator clip type unit! 5Handy, For Intended Use...As long as I limit use of this vise to the intended purpose and recognize the limitations...this is a handy little vise. However, as you know, does not replace the need for a 6" cast-iron vise on the garage workbench. Also, go ahead and purchase the #239 'speed control handle' with the #201 Junior for another $3.49. I don't understand why its not already included by PanaVise? So I really give this little vise 5 for functionality/concept and manufacturing quality. But material quality (more so material selection) is 3-4 at best. Time, and limit the abuse, will tell the durability story. One feature, included intentional/unintentional in the design, is the end-of-travel stop on the lead-screw comes off if the vise jaws are opened beyond the maximum 2.875-inch. Not sure if this was intended to prevent user from stripping lead-screw threads in the opening direction...#10-24 lead-screw and spindle-nut are a ferrous metal. Vice jaw is a nylon material and the base is cast aluminum...Modification; I had some (roughly) 2-inch diameter round-base magnets (RB50CX6) on hand so I decided to attach them to the #201 Junior vise. The magnets had ~13/64-inch (5mm) hole in the middle that I enlarged to 1/4-inch to match the the vise base mounting holes. I added some 2-inch wide Gorilla Clear Repair Tape to the bottom of the magnets to protect surface from damage during attachment/removal of the magnetic base...Mod allows me to attach the vice to a QuadHands base-plate for stability and increase usefulness of the both the PanaVise #201 Junior and the QuadHands Deluxe workbench. In addition, the weight and surface area of the magnets attached to the base also improved vice stability when just setting on the workbench.Overall I recommend this little vice for hobbies / electronics and other lite-duty projects.4immeasurably better than the "helping hands"My dad has been using this mini vise for over a decade now, and I love it so much I finally had to get my own. If you solder, build models, work on small gadgets, or put together or paint any sort of small craft, I can't recommend this vise enough. The plastic clamps are soft enough that they won't damage most things, and if I need guaranteed softness, I just put a microfiber cloth between the clamps and the item. The base is heavy enough that you don't really need to screw it to anything, but you absolutely could. I use it mostly for soldering small PCBs and P2P wired projects, and it is immeasurably better than one of those junky "helping hands" things with alligator clips and a magnifying glass. Easy to adjust and use, versatile, well-built, and supremely useful for crafting/making/building/assemblying. Get one! Get two!5Works Really very simple and inexpensive solution to a basic problem that a lot more expensive products address. I might end up getting one of those now that basic principal of using a helping hands solution has proven itself. But then again, this little guy might be able to go the distance. If you don't have constant and complicated need for this type of assistant, this is probably enough. 5Junior is correctThis is a very small vise, and isn't very good at all for PC boards. It doesn't open wide enough to hold a board. But if you put it in thinwise, you can't get it to hold a board level either in the up or down position because the vise gets in the way of itself. It also take like a million turns to go from fully opened to closed. This was a bad choice for PCB's.2
