Customer Reviews

Great in lighted areas, uses direct video bus I chose this camera for my 3d printer enclosure because the Pi camera uses the built in video bus for processing the webcam stream. Using a USB webcam directly loads all video being recorded through the CPU. For my needs this camera was the better choice even though it was 4x the price of a cheap USB webcam 5Lack of documentation a hindrance The camera module works well, but I had to go searching for information on the proper orientation of the ribbon cable when connecting to a Raspberry Pi (3B+ in my case). What I was unaware of was that the connector on the Pi side had a lift-up latch which then needs to be pushed back down to lock the connector in place. Once I did that, the camera worked....But it was out of focus. After still more searching, I discovered that the V2 camera is preset to "infinity" focus, but that the focus IS changeable. It turns out that the plastic funnel-shaped piece included with the camera is a tool for adjusting the focus, something mentioned nowhere I could find. You push it against the front of the lens and turn one way or another to adjust. Of course, you'll have to test a view after each adjustment to see the effect.Once I got that out of the way, it worked very well, though the depth of field is rather shallow. 4This is a great hobby camera with Consistent picture quality This camera is exactly as described. Very small but very good quality. I've been having issues with my Raspberry Pi that required me to repeatedly power cycle the device and it still isn't having any issues. It's a quality 1080 image/video and though I've seen comments about focus, I have had no issues. I actually use my pi to keep an I eye on the house & watch my 3d Printer progress through different prints, and I am more than happy with the results. The package was delivered on time with no damage. Good Buy.For those having issues getting started streaming, simply open terminal and run the following command:sudo modprobe bcm2835-v4l2The is an "L" not a "1" by the way. It works perfectly. The screenshot attached is a picture of my raspberry pi streaming video over the internet on my phone while I was testing a new camera position for watching my 3d Printer. 5I don't like the quality or resolution of camera sometimes It's working, I don't like the quality or resolution of camera sometimes. Also, I notice that order same camera before and it came in different packaging (plastic bag). It didn't work for so I order new one that came in paper bag and it is working perfectly fine. 4Box smashed, questionable upgrade from older camera version THE BOX ARRIVED SMASHED! Other than that, the camera is "just okay". The pics are not as focused as my older 1.3 camera but it will work for what I need it for. You need to adjust the focus with the supplied tool or the clarity is really bad. I thankfully found no glue on the lens bezel as described on many websites. I was glad that the adjustment could be made easily without pliers and it didn't mess up the bezel at all. This is a specialty camera with no IR filter so if you're looking for normal pictures will full color quality, this isn't the camera you want. Included in the box are: the camera, lens adjusting tool, 6" ribbon cable and the blue filter. 3Great for a 3D printer camera! Works quite well as a 3D printer camera with an Octopi server on a Raspberry Pi 3 B+. 5Get the 5 Megapixel version. Having used the predecessor of this camera for quite a lot of time lapse photography outdoors, the first thing I noticed about this one was the excessive pincushion distortion. Distant objects have a fuzzier focus despite the higher resolution; take pictures of the same distant subject with this camera and with the 5 Megapixel version and the latter will be sharper. You can use ImageMagick to correct the pincushion distortion (mostly), but after you have cropped out what is usable (Correcting pincushion distortion messes up the edges.), you don't have left many more pixels than you would have had from the older version 1 camera. After using this camera for a while, I went back to my old version 1 since it takes better pictures--both sharper and less distorted. 2IP Camera Project Success Update: Added a few pictures. One is a newer Foscam 1080p camera, one a Foscam 720p camera and one this new 8MP camera for the Pi. The Pi camera does in fact seem to generally be a little blurry, in my opinion. I hadn't noticed it before others mentioned it but you can see how the wood eve along the top of the frame looks perfectly focused while the objects in the distance look out of focus. I know comparing it to a 1080p new Foscam is not totally fair, but I thought I'd add in both 720p and 1080p references to see some differences so people know what some comparisons are. I also wanted to show the FOV (field of view) this camera provides. For reference, the 1080p camera is 110 degree, the 720p camera is 70 degree, which seems to be pretty comparable to this RPi camera. The RPi camera image resolution is 3240 x 2464.Camera's used in the attached pictures:1080p camera = Foscam R2B720p camera= Foscam 9821 V2I'm keeping the 4 star review, in the spirit of this camera sensor only being ~$30 and a great project for the raspberry Pi.Original Review:I never owned or used the original 5MP camera but this one is as expected for a $30 camera. I'm not seeing any focus issues on my unit like another reviewer has, but I'm sure I'll end up tinkering with it anyway. The only thing I had to do was update the firmware on the Pi by running "rpi-update". I had to do this because the image out of the box was mirrored, which took some googling to see that lots of people have the same issue. If you intend on using motioneyeOS (not the normal motioneye inside Raspbian) that the image will be mirrored since you can't update the firmware in that OS and they haven't updated their code at the time of this writing.8MP resolution is 3,264 x 2,448 the video specs are max 1080p30, which is a lower FOV than you'll probably want. The full frame video resolution I'm currently using is 1620 x 1232 which achieves 4:3 aspect ratio (full frame). Doesn't seem to place a big load on the CPU. See the attached images for the documentation on resolution modes with this camera.Right now I'm using this as an IP camera using RPi-Cam-Web-Interface which works well if you're after a good IP Camera solution with a nice web GUI front end.Obviously, if you want IR night time viewing with an external IR light source, you need the NoIR version of this camera. Beware though, that the daytime image will looks slightly...weird. But you already knew that if you own a Pi and are interested in this stuff, didn't you.... 4There could be some better instructions. I sent one back because it was ... There could be some better instructions. I sent one back because it was blurry (yes i removed the film first). It wasnt until the replacement came and had the same problem, that i discovered some posts about twistine the lens to focus. Could have saved me some time and amazon some shipping. 4Great. Just as advertised. Excellent for its purpose. If you need a surveillance camera this is great. Works well in daylight (though colors are washed off due to the lack of IR filtering). When lit at night by standard flourescent and LEDs the colors appear suprisingly well. Combine this with a 850nm IR LED then you have excellent visibility in the dark. Works outdoors too, you only have to slightly change the focus by rotating the lens. 5
