Customer Reviews

Read the fine print about operating system. Not advertised as it comes. This product says it works for Mac however it works just okay for Mac for a little bit. Not made for most current macs or any Mac on the os. Buyer beware. Worked okay for just less than one month then stopped working. 1This product was a disappointment. The hardware is easy to use and video ... This product was a disappointment. The hardware is easy to use and video capture generally works ok. But, if capture is paused and you want to fast forward the VHS to the next scene, the product somehow gets the next audio and video out of sync and the capture is useless. Actually, as I used it more copying a wedding video, I noticed the audio seemed to be always a little out of sink. OK with some video but not good if the video is directly of someone talking. Also, the DVD edit and burn software is buggy. It doesn't want to shut down so I've had to use the "Force Quit" function on my Mac to get the thing to close. Overall, the product works, sort of, and is fairly easy to figure out, but still a disappointment. 1It is so simple that one tries to make it difficult Originally I purchased a competing product, but it utterly failed, so I opted for a few dollars more to buy this Roxio video capture system. The instructions, while sparse, are quite clear. The software is installed in your Mac and after installation, one is greeted with the now familiar compatibility warning that it is 32 bit and will soon not work on your Mac. Not to worry, almost immediately a popup reveals an update which you should download and allow to install and relaunch. Once done, connect up your device to your Mac and to your VCR or Camcorder, open the window and follow the easy directions. WARNING!!! prepare to go have lunch as the tape MUST PLAY IN REAL TIME. So, if a tape is 2 hours, that is how long it will take. Once done, you will find the completed .mov file in your User folder under Movies with a Roxio Video Capture folder that contains the movie. After that you can edit the movie in iMovie or, if it is good enough and you don't need sound track or titles, just burn it to an appropriate disk (CD, DVD or dual layer DVD). While I am not the world's greatest lover of Roxio, this baby works as advertised. Glad I bought it as I have some videos shot 40 years ago that needed to be saved digitally. My wife is happy. "happy wives make happy husbands". (old proverb) 5OH MY! Ok, when I saw the price for this "gizmo" I figured it had to be cheap and would never work. Or work for just a short time. I waited to review it until after I gave it a fair shake. I've now completed over 20 VHS movies to Digital format and let me tell you this thing really works! I can now save old VHS movies that never got made to DVD as well as home "movies". It has been a blast to watch the "old" stuff again and now I have it saved on my computer and can watch it any time or anywhere. So worth the investment and so easy to use. 5Don't Bother! Thought a Roxio product would actually work but was sadly mistaken. The interface was easy and actually worked pulling in a video from my VHS player. That is as far as my positive comments can go. The software that came with this was worthless. You press record and it appears to be recording, but after you are done you would expect a button saying finish recording (or save, or something along that line) but there isn't and the recording does not save anywhere on your hard drive.I went to the Roxio site and there is no support for the product at all. The software only showed an update for older software than what came with the product. I thought maybe it would help so I downloaded the only software they had on the Roxio site and it was worse than the original. With no ability to "save" the recording, it will not be in my possession for very long. I am sending it back. I have looked into the Elgato Video Capture option. I hope it works better than this POC! 1Everything you should know. It's only USB 2.0. It will only work with USB 2.0. And you only know this when you install the software and go to plug in the device and see that it won't be recognized by the software but it is recognized by the computer. So if you have an Mac that is 2012 or newer, you will not be able to use this product. I had to borrow a neighbors old 2010 MacBook Pro to use this product. It does a decent job recording the videos. I'm just glad I have to do this only once. Also, Roxio customer service sucks terribly. I got one email reply back from them 24 hours after I sent one, then replied to that one like instructed to if I had more questions and it's been a week and haven't heard anything about they said I would have a response in 24 hours. So in the end, it's fine. It gets the job done, but you need an older Mac (Pre-2011) and customer service sucks. 2Doesn't Work Well I had a Sony VHS to DVD player-- would play either medium and you could dub back and forth. I copied hundreds of VHS tapes (both commercial and things I had taped from television and rented DVDs) to DVD. It was a bit complicated to follow the process at first but once you had it, it was easy and the quality was great. After 12 years it ceased to function, and I wanted another one. Couldn't be found other than random models sold independently for a staggering amount of money. When I went to a big box electronics store, the salesperson recommended this Roxio product and showed me home video she had copied and stored on her phone. Seemed like decent quality and so I bought it. Had to return it because even though I said multiple times I am a Mac user I got it home and it was for Windows. So I found the Mac version on Amazon for considerably less (about $40 savings). It was fairly simple to hook up and the instructions to begin taping are fairly simple, also. You will need a VCR, which I happened to have in a box in the closet. So far, so good. You start the VCR, (or a video camera, apparently, can also be used) which is connected with the actual Roxio device to the computer. I hit Play on the VCR and Record on the computer screen where the Roxio window was displayed.Again, so far so good. After one tape was completed I wanted to watch it to check if it had worked (I had been burned on another companies similar device to turn cassette tapes into computer files). It's a bit of a challenge to even find where the file gets stored on the computer. Once found I attempted to drag and drop to iMovies but that didn't work, nor did moving the Roxio icon to the dock. So I had to search to even locate it, and still don't know precisely where on the hard drive it has sent the file. But then , the bad news...The picture quality is faded (even in the small window where it displays on the computer, so no telling what will happen when played large on a TV screen) and, worse, the sound does not sync to the picture. It's like the scene in "Singing in the Rain" where the picture gets ahead of the soundtrack.I happened to be copying old episodes of TV variety shows, so both the speaking and the singing are off-kilter.I will call tech support for the company-- remains to be seen if that is even responsive. If not this will be returned.I don't know if there are other equivalent products-- this was the only brand I found-- but it is NOT recommended. Looks like I will be keeping my VCR and finding a place to store the old video tapes. 1A completely USELESS and BROKEN product! I have about thirty VHS tapes I'm looking to convert to a digital format. I'm using a Mac with about a terabyte of free space and a 2.8Ghz processor. Plenty of power and resources to capture some old video from VHS tapes. I would have thought, anyway. Immediately after setup, I noticed that my first capture had visible signs of compression (the little squares you see when you watch a really low-quality video online, for instance). There are three options for quality: low, medium and high. That's it! No ability to adjust compression or audio quality, just three settings, and the highest one still shows incredibly noticeable compression. As if that's not bad enough, the Roxio software can't keep up with the video and drops frames constantly. I tried lowering the quality setting to medium, as a user on a forum suggested the high setting is completely useless and should be considered a product defect.I downloaded an update for the capture software and restarted my system, hoping this would take care of the problem. I did a 38-second test recording and my Mac is still idling as Roxio completely fails to process it. It's still idling right now, as I write this.I would be ashamed to have my company's name attached to this product! 1This works Great ! Really is Easy user interface. I got all my 30-Yr-Old VHS-C Tapes Digitized ! Wow ! This worked great for me ! I digitized all my old VHS-C tapes with Roxio Video Capture. I was able to transfer the videos to a PhotoSpring Digital Picture Frame. The 30 year old videos came out great. There is a sizing option on the software so you can break up the video into smaller files. This was perfect for my purpose - recovering old VHS tapes before they rot. I was thrilled to see these old videos of family, friends, vacations. Now they are on a digital photo frame to see anytime. I was also able to see them on my TV with the Apple TV box (the PhotoSpring frame resolution looks better than on TV). I was going to make a return to Roxio at first because it crashed. (They do accept returns.) But I persevered and found out it was my VHS player which was broken. I bought a used JVC HRS5912U VHS player for $65, s-video male to male cables $12 to hook it up, and a VHS cleaning kit $10 to clean the heads periodically while running these old tapes through it. I already had a VHS_C cassette adapter (had to replace corroded batteries & clean up, otherwise new is $20). You also need RCA male to male Stereo cable - I already had lots of them. This all worked fine. The VHS player doesn't have to be hooked up through the TV, I just cabled it to my computer with the player sitting under my MacBook - when you hit play on VHS Player, the display goes through the Roxio Video Capture program. The Roxio USB connector was a little loose so try not to jostle it. I tested recording quality difference between a Composite -vs- S-video hookup: Definitely use S-video if you have the option, composite is not bad though. It was all worth it - the cash and the effort. The results are priceless ! Can you imagine getting to recover video from so long ago ? Thanks Roxio ! 5Customer support was pretty useless. It would take a day to get ... I was never able to get this product to work. I installed it on my MacBook Pro with MacOS 10.13 on it and it just wouldn't recognize the video capture device. After spending a ton of time on it - I then realized that it's only set to work on MacOS 10.5 to 10.8. Finding MacOS 10.8 was a bear since it's such an old operating system. I finally got it and then spent a ton of time getting MacOS installed on a MacBook Air. Once installed it still wouldn't recognize it. Customer support was pretty useless. It would take a day to get back to me per question and the responses were fairly useless. I finally gave up after wasting a lot of time. 1
