Customer Reviews

Get An S66N Instead! The Single Lock Mechanism Sucks!I've owned the PowerAssist (S66N) for about a year and I've been very happy with it. I love the user-replaceable blades and while you may not like the 'wings', they're a lot nicer on your hands than the bare channel. Since I generally carry a small pocketknife, I don't really need a multi-tool with a knife.. So, I purchased the S60, planning on replacing the knife blade with another tool. HOWEVER, the S60N which I received, from Amazon, which appears to be the current shipping model, is the one with the single lock for the tools. The single lock sucks. No, really, it SUCKS. The S66N has the piano style locks where each tool has an individual lock. The problem with the single lock is that if all the tools, other than the one you're using, are not folded exactly right, the lock won't actually lock! This is a major problem! The picture that Amazon has shows an earlier model S60 that has the piano style locks and the hex head bolts rather than the allen key bolts. The shipping item is NOT as pictured, and as far as I can tell from SOG, the current model is the one with the single lock and the allen key bolts.. I'm sure the single lock is significantly cheaper to manufacture! Also, the fit and finish of the S66N (purchased November 2015) compared to the S60N (purchased November 2014) is like a child toy. The S66N has razor sharp ruler markings and a beautiful finish. All the individual tools are shiny without any casting imperfections. The S60N's ruler markings are so faded/indistinct that they're almost unusable. The phillips screwdriver is a rough casting with poorly defined screw blades. The marlinspike has jagged burrs on it - it will ruin the rope of any knot you try to use it on.Also, the cam/gear mechanism for the pliers is a very nice force multiplier, but it means that if you need to open the pliers particularly wide, the handles go out very far which may leave you with insufficient room/leverage to actually use the pliers... I would say that it is more common for me to wish that there was some way to turn the cam/gear mechanism off than for me to be thankful that I have the extra gripping power....I don't know if the S60N has always been inferior to the S66N or if SOG's manufacturing has just gone downhill, or if I just got a poor specimen.. However, I could live with the casting issues and I could live with the faded ruler, but the single lock is just a pile of steaming doodoo.2Knife sharpness - The smooth part of the blade has gone dull within a handful of cuts and requires sharpening Likes:1. Geared plier tip hinge - opening and closing the tool is predictable (unlike Leathermans. I've pinched a finger a few times because the plier tip was at a narrower angle than expected since it's position is independent of the opening angle of the tool).2. Narrower plier tips - Has no effect on gripping power or effectiveness, but does add some more versatility to the tool.3. Removable covers - safe option for the accessory tools that is removable. I removed mine after a while but may consider putting them back on.Dislikes:1. Knife sharpness - The smooth part of the blade has gone dull within a handful of cuts and requires sharpening. Probably not the best for precision cutting. The tip is still extremely sharp though and the serrated side still cuts like a laser.Overall, this feels much more like a workhorse. I've owned other popular branded multitools as well, but the quality of those seems to have gone downhill (ie: I was using the the flathead tool of a Leatherman to remove a battery cover - nothing heavy duty - the flathead tip shattered). 4Pretty decent but fidly. Also the coating comes off. It's definitely one of the better multitools I have owned, but it's a little fiddly to operate: Most of the tools are hard to swing out, and while the 'hatch' you open to access them is a welcome way to prevent either another tool folding out or the one you're using failing to lock in place, the thing itself is difficult to open. Also beware that the black paint (or whatever the coating is) will come off very easily. Not only does it wear away, but it also needs to be rinsed off - either with water, some sort of oil (preferred for obvious reasons), or both in succession. 4Don t waste your timeThis is my second pair of these pliers. First pair lasted about a month of average use and needle nose shattered. Ordered another pair because I very much like the compound leverage that you get with them. Needle nose pliers exploded the second time I used them. Good thing they have a lifetime warranty as I will have to send both pair in for repairs. Doesn t help me at work as I depend heavily on my tools to function properly. Long story short I carry a leatherman multitool now.1SOG cutters very soft Bought this to use around the farm where I often cut hard barbwire etc. As soon as I got it a couple days ago I decided to try cutting various things including one of the curved wire drywall picture frame hangers. These are harder than a nail but are easily bendable and much softer than music wire which is used to make springs.I was shocked when after one cut the tools stainless steel cutter had a large round dent in each jaw. Thinking the wire must have been harder than I thought I then cut the same wire with a cheap chinese set of long nose pliers and with a $9 pair of chinese electrical pliers. Cut through with absolutely no dent to blades at all. For a sixty dollar tool I find this very disappointing.Had started to buy the leathermen with the replaceable steel cutters but wanted scissors which those leathermen do not have. Wish I had went with the leathermen now as this SOG tool will all but useless to me and I am not sure if I can return to Amazon since they would likely say it's my fault. 3Loving it I m loving it. Tossed around for a few months deciding on what to get. Finally decided on the SOG PowerLock EOD. Looked at gerbers & leathermans watched load of youtube vids. Decided on this one because of the rounded angled needle nose and the scissors. They seemed larger than the others. The increased pressure while clamping. I am not disappointed 5Poor CoatingI have purchased other SOG products in the past. Based on my positive experience, I purchased the EOD Powerlock. As soon as I received this I noticed my hands were covered with a black oily substance. I got a soft microfiber soft to wipe off the oil. While doing this I noticed the black oxide finish coming off. These multi tools are only 2 days old and are no longer black and now bare metal. Poor coating. Will never purchase another SOG product againm1Solid toolMonth in and I m impressed. I specialize in mechanical pest control, so a great multi tool is a must with pigeon and rodent work. Most used tools are opened for display in the photo. I actually got this particular one since it has a quarter inch bit as a tool, which I thought would be handy. Haven t used it yet!The first time using the wire cutters on bailing wire seemed to slightly displace the alignment, but it straightened out somehow after a bit. Can t really hold and twist hog rings without the twisting the alignment of the pliers. Minor nuscience, but just a straight pull back yields same results. Outside of work, I ve opened up toys to switch batteries, packaging materials are easily handled by scissors and knife, and popped plenty of cold ones.5STRONG PLIERS!I gotta say....wow. I typically buy Leatherman brand multi tools. They are generally more expensive than this also. I purchased this because of the black color and because the gear mechanisms give it much more force with the pliers than normal ones.I saw the vids on YouTube showing people cut coins in half with them. I really thought that was a gimmick. Nope! Now I have a pile of sliced up pennies and dimes. The flip out action is super smooth. You can flip it one handed, the file is great, the flathead (my most used tool) is a bit tricky to access with gloves on, the handle covers make a world of difference in comfort, and the pliers are second to none. I'd prefer these over my Knipex needle nose any day. That damn gearing thing multiplies the force a ton. For real! The pliers also meet at the very tip. Most pliers have a tiny gap at the tip. I hate that.Good job SOG!5ALMOST as good as my Paladin.Well, it's SOG, so it's Lifetime Guarantee on the main tool (not on the blades, though). My wonderful Paladin PT-525 finally broke at the jaw when I torqued it hard in the wrong direction. Turns out that SOG was partners with Paladin and made that tool, so they're fixing that for free. But I bought a second one for my son, as it's so useful and well made.Took off one star because they no longer make those specialty blades that came on my Paladin, and set it apart from everybody else's multi-tool. They don't make the Telephone/Data blades anymore, and that was a BIG plus for me.Hey, SOG - you listening? Make more blades available - you'll be a favorite of each industry that you do that for!4great multitool for the moneyThis multi tool has seen a lot of use of the year that I had it. I used it every day at work or when I need to make a quick repair, it has all the basic tools to help you out of a jam. I customized mine to have the wire stripper, fuzewell spike, and v-cutter because the saw is great but don't use it often. The scissors work but not like victorinox and they tend to jam a lot, the knife while it did come very sharp lost its edge quickly. every other tool is ok but the screw drivers are too short for some uses, you also have to be careful not to unlock the tool you are using. but its better than nothing and I learned to deal with its little quirks. The pliers and wire cutters are my favorite because the plier head has such precise tips doing tiny work like making a metal model so much easer to bend the tiny tabs compared to regular pliers. The wire cutter is great it can cut a Penney in half with little effort and works great when cutting wire, I only used it on 24-12 gage electrical wire so I don't know about other types of wire like steel cable. so its a great tool for the money the ability to replace any of the parts make it great tool that will last a long time5HIGH QUALITY, SOLID, DEPENDABLE, VERSATILECan't argue with build quality - this is one TOUGH TOOL. BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR NAME ENGRAVED ON THIS somewhere because they are so awesome, they sometimes grow legs and walk away!My son has one (Army) and my wife has one (Navy). They both treasure them and keep them on their person at all times. If I was stranded on an island and could have only ONE item with me - it would be my wife, but the SOG tool comes in a close 2nd. :)I am concerned with SOG customer service though - I sent 2 emails and left a voicemail and NEVER got a return call. There was not a problem with the tool, I just wanted information on switching out one of the tools (which would have helped me avoid some mistakes I made later, but no damage).By the way, replaceable tools are a GREAT feature. This tool can be easily disassembled for cleaning or replacement of broken tools. I took it apart because my Navy wife wanted Scissors AND a VCutter, which are NOT sold together on any tool. We ordered the VCutter by itself from SOG and it arrived quickly (although shipping was a bit steep for a tiny part that could have been slipped into a first class mail envelope for less than a buck). We had to locate two allen head wrenches to disassemble the tool, but that wasn't too bad.BEWARE, you CANNOT switch out any tool for any other tool! The tools are different widths and different lengths, so you need to be careful to switch ONLY tools of the same widths (or use a narrower replacement with your own spacer washers) AND same length or shorter replacement because the plier head folds into the handle so the tools on each side must be sequenced with SHORT tools in the middle to accommodate the "needle" point of the pliers nesting into the handles. It was a bit tricky re-assembling the scissors (Kudos to whomever made the great How-To You Tube video!) and it took patience and steady hands, but we re-assembled the entire tool with the Vcutter in place of a bottle opener. Because the VCutter is a bit longer than the bottle opener, the tool does not fold ENTIRELY closed, but folds almost closed and fits into the sheath fine.My wife is okay with the compromise so she can have her VCutter and Scissors (and a host of other tools!). The tool works great and feels exceptionally solid in the hand. The tool locks seem serviceable, and the gears on the plier head can exert tremendous force (more than any regular pliers!).5If you want a really good multi-tool for a reasonable price, this is the one! When I buy something, I always spend a considerable amount of time researching all the options, pros and cons, etc, before pulling the trigger on a specific product. So when it came to buying a multi-tool, I ended up reading on endless forums and reviews about how great Leathermans are in general, and how great the Leatherman Wave is in particular. So, feeling pretty confident about my choice, I went online and ordered a Leatherman Wave.Turns out that Leatherman products are not what people make them to be! I was very disappointed with my Wave for a multitude of reasons, which I explained in detail in my review. The interesting thing is that I got a bunch of "not helpful" votes, which is quite funny, considering that a "not helpful" review is a review that is either too short, doesn't provide any real information, or is blatantly biased. Which was clearly not the case with mine. So I can only think that there is a good number of Leatherman fanboys who just don't like to see their favorite product criticized and react by childishly clicking "not helpful".The reason why I'm telling you this is that when it comes to choosing a product for which there is a certain very popular brand, it might be hard to go against the current. But if you see how much of a difference there is between the two multi-tools, you might realize that sometimes it really pays off to go against the current.Pretty much all the issues I had with the Leatherman are not issues with the SOG. The opening action is butter-smooth, and the pliers don't grind against the handle when closing the multi-tool. The tools in the handles come out VERY easily without having to do any "break-in" nonsense, or loosening the screws. The handles have smooth edges that make it very comfortable to use.Additionally the SOG has a gear system for the pliers that multiplies your strength two fold. This can either allow people who doesn't have a lot of hand strength to use the pliers very effectively, or people who already have a lot of hand strength to use the cutters to cut almost anything that fits in them.Overall I'm extremely satisfied with this SOG, I have been using it for so many things, for working on my car to little repairs in the house. Even removing the butt-cap from a marker so that I could pour a little bit of rubbing alcohol in it and allow my wife to keep using it after it was spent. Also did I mentioned that the SOG is actually cheaper than the Letherman Wave? You really can't go wrong with this multi-tool. Sure it's a bit heavy, but that's the trade off to pay if you want to have a real multi-tool. If you want something lighter I would personally suggest looking into Suisse Army Knives instead. The great thing about a multi-tool is that you have a good set of pliers (needle-nose and regular) in your pocket. If you have any question, let me know, I'm happy to help! And if you found this review useful, please consider clicking yes below.I have noticed that several reviews I have written on items purchased through Amazon have had the "Verified Purchase" removed incorrectly and as a result are no longer visible, which is likely happening to other people as well. When you read reviews, be sure to sort by 'All reviews' since there is obviously a bug in the system and many helpful and detailed reviews are now hidden.5not bad Many claim that sog is the best multitool. I was impressed with the power of the pliers, and have needed the power a few times. Before I ordered this I knew I wouldn't like the flipping tool covers, and after using it I still don't like them. It seems like most of the tools were afterthoughts rather than to be used as actual tools. The knife is too thin for my liking but it's not flimsy. The wood saw was better designed than I thought it would be, I like that it tapers towards the back so as not to bind while cutting. The file is so poorly cut that it's useless, but I have better files on other tools so I'm not worried. Flat head screwdrivers and can opener are great, as is the 1/4" bit adapter. I bought the small bit kit and adapter for it but the bit holder needs work, I have already lost all of my phillips bits. Scissors are thin but work well enough. It feels like they rely on the plier part too much for the price. Tbh I like my swisstool spirit much more. It's not a bad tool overall, but if I had to buy it again I probably wouldn't. It may just be this model, or just this individual tool however, so I'm not completely turned off sog yet. 4They're not making them like they use to anymore. The S.O.G. multi purpose tool use to be my favorite one, and I've owned many gerbers and leathermans. Now they suck, they're made cheaply and nothing on them works like it use to, besides maybe the pliers. I ordered this tool to replace my old one that fell in the lake. The scissors on the new tool sucks, the little Allen bolt that holds all the tools inside the housing will fall out on you if don't constantly tighten it or use locktite to keep it from backing out on you. I'm really disappointed in S.O.G. What use to be my favorite tool is now my least favorite tool. I hate to bash S.O.G. but the quality just ain't there anymore. The ones they issued me in the Army were bulletproof, it's a shame. Smh 1fairly durable, but also fairly fiddly. The pliers on this are top notch, let me just say. but a multitool needs to be more than that. the lock system is a good idea, but as implemented is far too troublesome and fiddly, perhaps because of my large hands, perhaps just because its awkward to press in the levering system they came up with. maybe this will improve as it wears in and there is less spring tension, but having a slightly longer lever to push on or a raised bump to get my thumb on would have been nice. the part that really gets my goat is the 1/4 drive tool. when locked in the 90 degree position, it is completely unusable. the dust cover/ handle guard thingy impinges on it so it cannot be closed for use in this position. you can flip the guard up/open, but then you are going to need a 1/4 extension bar to reach anything in a real world situation, because you have the guard and the pliers sticking out in quite the awkward position.and odds are good if i had a 1/4 extension, i have the rest of my socket set too. with a ratchet. its like noone at SOG actually threw a socket on here and tried it out before settling on this design.but the part that really bums me out more than that is the black coating, it just isn't very durable compared to other ceramic tool coatings i have seen. I mean they even advertise it can be "wiped off clean" like that is supposed to be a selling point, but like... why would i want that? its supposed to be there to protect the steel from rust, i wish it to stay there.it still gets 3 stars, because like i said, its a really good set of pliers. but its a really good set of pliers with half-assed multitool features attached. and i can pay less money if all i wanted was a good set of pliers.3
