Customer Reviews

Big antenna at a medium price Just reading the specs doesn't do justice to actually assembling this antenna; it's really really big. I mounted it on my roof mast, and a word of caution: any wind during assembly will make it feel like you're holding the longest fishing rod in the world, and it's being pulled by a shark. It's got a LOT of torque. I had to open the U-bolts wide and tape the nut end down so they stayed wide while I dropped the assembly onto the mast. It was a good upper-body workout. So far I'm pleased with its performance. I'm up on a hill and have a sideband CB. Unfortunately, there aren't many CBers left in my area so all 40 channels are usually quiet. I've picked up a few distant conversations here and there. I'm still waiting to connect with someone to get a better sense of the range. I'll post back if I do. 4Get the RIGHT COAX CABLE!! ...RG 213...!! ATTENTION!! make sure you buy good quality RG213 cable for this antenna!!! (the THICK stuff) I spoke to the guy who designed this antenna! He says it's set-up specifically to use RG213 coax! It's also tuned for use of 75 to 100 ft of cable and the antenna tip should be at or around 35 to 40 ft up in the air!... (No higher, no lower!) I bought the RG8X stuff (el cheapo) and got horribly high SWR readings! Haven't set up the new cable yet... so we'll see if that fixes the problem .. I burned up a transistor running the cheap cable which forced me to re-check my SWR meter... I was using it wrong from the start.. Yikes! This is the real poop straight from the guy who makes this antenna... :) Good luck and have fun!! 5Just like other buyers Just like other buyers, the SWR went sky high after a short time. Took it all back down and could see no reason for it - must be an internal problem with the antenna. Put my little Starduster back up with the same coax that was used with this imax and all is well. Solarcons quality has gone way down recently. I would not buy another one of their products. 1Great Antenna Have it mounted only 16' high on a mast, barefoot (8w), 100ft of LMR400.I can RX and TX up to about 20 miles (to another base station) at any time, and when the "conditions" come in I have no problem hitting Michigan from SWF with strong signal reports. It does pick up more background noise than other antennas though. I added on their ground plane kit to try and reduce this noise, but it did nothing. Nothing for the rx\tx either and it looks ugly also.Buy the antenna, skip the GPK! 5Long time ham - Absolutely AMAZED! I have been around Ham radio since the early 1970's, back when REAL radios glowed in the dark! My dad was a ham and I spent more time than I would like to admit home brewing antennas, erecting antennas and trying out something new. To say I know how to wring out an antenna would be an understatement...I learned a few tricks along the way, I also learned a few things to avoid...I installed this with the radial kit a couple of months ago and wanted to give it a good test before I reviewed it here on Amazon. It has become one of my favorite antennas. I have ended up using it a LOT!Verticals are inherently noisy - not THIS antenna! CB antennas are usually pretty cheap and shoddy - not THIS antenna! Some aluminum verticals are a pain to put together - not THIS antenna! Not only does it perform wonderfully on 10, 11, 12 and 15 meters but it is QUIET!!!I didn't cut it to tune it, I left it just like I bought it and assembled it in less than 15 minutes upon arrival. I put it on a tripod on the roof to test it out before putting it up on the 50 ft. tower. I even put a 30 year old coax on it because I just wanted to see if it worked... I figured if it worked like this, it was going to work great on top of the tower...In a word, WOW! At first, I thought something was wrong, instead of a wall of white noise on HF - I hear quiet... Maybe that coax was bad after all...And then I tuned around and found all sorts of signals out there down in the weeds where I couldn't hear them before! I flipped the switch to my old antennas and these people disappeared - flip back to this antenna and WOW, DX all over the place!India, North Africa, Italy, Spain, France, a bunch of islands in the Atlantic and a bunch of South American hams and loads of US stations in the first few hours of operation... The pacific islands, Australia and the far East opened up when the sun moved over to the West. I dusted off my microphone and worked 14 DX contacts with no effort at all what-so-frickin'-ever!Uhmmm... wow... I mean Wow... But I was still curious... This wasn't my first vertical antenna... They are usually noisy beasts when the sun is high...I was sort of stunned - really, seriously... This made me scratch my head... It made me want to take it all apart to see what's inside! The antenna nut inside my head was saying DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! The practical old fart who doesn't like climbing towers more than once inside of me won out though...I moved it to another tripod 12 ft. away - same results... Amazing...It makes my other antennas seem lame... Not bad for 18 ft. off the ground and a 30 year old coax that is two steps away from the recycling scrap pile...It is more quiet than any other 10m antenna mono-banders I have up in the air! (I have a couple) It is more quiet than my multi-band verticals OR my dipoles. It is hands down 10-20DB better on receive than my 3 element beam at certain points of the day - which is REALLY saying something! It displays about 1.5:1 SWR on the CW and SSB portion of the 10m band. It is flat as a pancake in the 11 meter band. It has about 1.6:1 on 12m and 1.8:1 on 15m. Whoa... How did they do THAT!?! This is weird... That isn't really supposed to be true - but my bird watt meter and antenna analyzer doesn't lie...Not only does it outperform other antennas, easy and quick to assemble, it is QUIET and more broad banded than any other antenna I own. It has been up in its "not so great" configuration for a couple of months now.I have 8 HF antennas up at the present time - and this one is my new favorite! It is going up on top of the 50 ft. tower (with 7/8" heliax!) this weekend and I can't wait for the DX to come rolling in...Totally amazed and very happy,73 de N5MBMINSTALLATION NOTES:My "not so great test bed" installation is on top of the roof on a short tripod mount. This mount is not grounded by a ground wire. It is mounted to the tripod with a 8 ft. piece of pipe and I ordered and installed the Solarcon radial kit. No other radial or ground counterpoise was installed. The roof has normal composition shingles. The antenna is about 18 ft. above ground level.I am using a very old 100' run of RG8 coax dating back to the early 1980's with silver plated Amphenol connectors. It is old but in good condition. I put an RF noise choke at the base of the antenna. I also put one down at the shack. The RF noise choke consists of the RG-8 coax feedline. The normal feedline you use to get the signal into the shack. I left a 6 inch pig tail for the antenna connection and then wrapped 12 turns around a 2 inch piece of PVC pipe about 8 inches long - making a coil around a PVC form secured with black zip ties through holes punched in the PVC pipe. It looks like a big wire wound resistor, but it works! This cuts the noise down!I ran the coax 30 ft across the roof horizontally and then down to the shack where I put another RF choke in line just like the one up at the antenna with a 6 ft. pigtail to my antenna switch. All one long piece of coax, no connectors in between the antenna and my antenna switch box. The fewer connectors in-line, the less loss you have and the less chance to introduce NOISE from your homes electronics and the power grid.It isn't the greatest installation, but it is a temporary "test" spot to tune and test the new antenna. (At the time of this review it had been installed over a couple of months.) I am still amazed and can't wait to put it on top of the tower with some good Andrews 7/8" hard line at 50 ft. above the ground!Three things to remember when installing this antenna -1 - Height, get it as high as you can! 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54 ft off the ground or multiples of 9 ft. will help your chances of good DX.2 - Radials and a good ground are a MUST! The radial kit they sell is good, but you can improve it. The more radials you put on it, the more SWR you will have and the narrower your band width but your efficiency of transmission will be improved. Tuned radials for your favorite bands WILL help, but they will also make your tuner become more necessary...3 - The RF noise chokes make this antenna so broad banded and Q U I E T it is absolutely amazing... The word "quiet" doesn't even begin to describe the performance. It is worth the extra coax and the funny looking coils dangling in the air!I wrote this while listening to a guy working QRP SSB out of Amsterdam on 28.400 Mc - he is running 20 watts working a Stateside pileup and I have an s4 on him but SOLID copy out of the noise!73 and GUD DX! 5Highest gain fiberglass vertical I've ever tested, and good for Ham bands, too! This is the 2nd Imax 2000 antenna I've owned, and like it alot. After about 9 years, the fiberglass will deteriorate from the UV rays in sunlight, and then a strong wind will eventually bring it down, but for what they cost and how they perform, I am still satisfied. a friend and I tested this antenna side-by-side on the same evening about 30 miles apart. He had an A99 and an Imax 2000. While my antenna remained the same (my Imax), he switched between his A99 and the Imax physically (he mounted it on the same pole at the same base height) - yes, because the Imax is taller, this also gave it a slight height advantage... I noticed a 3 s-unit improvement on my receive signal from his station when he used the Imax 2000. He also noticed the same 3 s-unit improvement on receive at his end (from my station) while he used the Imax. We both found it hard to believe that there was this much difference over the A99 which is also a fine antenna. I won't bore you here with technical details, etc. - I won't argue "how many db an s-unit is", etc. - Also, for you people considering purchasing a ground radial kit for the A99 OR the Imax, my advice is save your money. It did NOT lower our angle of radiation. On a seperate evening he tested the A99 and the Imax both with and without the radial kits attached (at HIS end, my station remained unchanged...) We both noticed NO perceptible difference in signal strength at either station, receive or transmit of either antenna whether the radial kit was on the antenna or not. We still noticed the 3 s-unit improvement of the Imax 2000 over the A99, but nothing else. In fact he noticed a slight climb in SWR on the Imax when the radial kit was installed. 4This is an excellent antenna for 10 and 11 meters VSWR = 1 This is an excellent antenna for 10 and 11 meters VSWR = 1:1.0 resonant. It definitely works 10 - 20 but has a lot of loss on 20 Meters. I have two tuners (Auto and Roller types) and never able to make work on 6 Meters. For 11 Meters no tuner is needed as it is perfect for CB use out of the box fine tuning using the tuning rings. I used mine for 2.5 years then ran into a problem with the VSWR spiking when the wind blew. I haven't been able to contact Solarcon for help. The fiberglass is in need of reconditioning also at this time. I recommend using a non-metallic paint to preserve your antenna prior to installing so you don't have any fiberglass splinters after a few years of use. Otherwise you may be in need of recovering your antenna with a boat polyurethane that costs as much as a new antenna. I do recommend this antenna for big results. Looking for help repairing mine. 4No tuning required right out of the box! No tuning required right out of the box! 1.2 SWR.Running a Galaxy DX959B radio, 40' of RG213/U coax on a 10' metal mast attached to facia board on roof eave. Grounded mast/antenna to an 8' ground rod using 8 gauge solid copper wires and ground lug.Even though this antenna isn't well clear of the house or high up, I'm getting extremely clear transmission and reception and solid range.I couldn't be happier!!!!!Hands down, a great product! 5Buy it! I was using a 102" steel whip on my base unit and moved to the Maxx 2000 and I couldn't be happier. This thing gets OUT! Factory set rings for SWR. I didnt even mess with them, though i was hesitant when they said they were set from the factory, but man, they were on the money. 1.1 and getting out. Im in Texas and regularly talk to Florida, Jamaica, South America, and Ontario on sideband. Never got past Louisiana or OKC with the old steel whip before, and the antenna was all i changed. 5Disappointing While it is better than and Antron 99, it is not tuned for the 10 meter band. I put the adjustment rings all the way up and that helped some but it is still not resonant in the upper part of the 10 meter band where I wanted it.If you have a CB it's just great. For Amatuer use, buy a Amatuer radio antenna, designed for the 10 meter band. There is one that will do both 10 meters and 6 meters, which will save space on your roof. 2
