Customer Reviews

Saved me a lot of timeI followed the directions and this worked exactly as expected. You do get the tone on multiple adjacent breakers but there is a distinct difference in the volume when you hit the breaker you are looking for.I Especially like that this came with the accessories as I needed the alligator clips to trace the breaker my household smoke detectors were attached to. I have now used this on 3 occasions. two outlets and the smoke detectors mentioned before. All 3 times it was quick and easy to walk up to the breaker Box, locate the breaker, and turn it off to verify. In the past there was a lot of running back-and-forth turning off breakers and disrupting the household in order to find the right one.Of course I then update the labeling in the Box so that I don't even have to use the tool again the next time. As always when working with electricity be careful, especially when using the alligator clips as you have to expose live wires. If you are unsure of what you are doing get professional help.5Ok, but burned upI used this to trace some outlets and it worked but had several 'false' identification sound of the breaker in several spots. Best way to ensure which breaker is correct is to switch it off to see if the sound goes away.Important note, this type of tracer needs power from the line to supply the signal.BURNED UP!I used the adapter alligator clips to connect this to the hot side of a switch and the neutral in order to identify the breaker. While I was at the panel searching for the breaker the sender got hot and melted.2OK tool for the price - Just need to know how to use itThis tool does work. At first I had the same issue as many other reviewers where all the breakers in my box seemed to have a signal and I could not find the correct breaker. I was ready to box the unit up and send it back but decided to look closer and follow the instructions more precisely. Instructions do not come inside the box and must be downloaded from Sperry's website (A quick google search with the model number brought the instructions up right away). A few points to get the tool to work.1. Ignore the 60hz buzzing/whining type sound the receiver picks up any time it gets close to the breaker box. Eventually I concluded this sound is noise from the AC lines inside the breaker box and in my case all the breakers in the box emit this noise a different levels. I was confusing this sound as the signal coming from the transmitter initially because the level is different for each breaker which made it seem like a signal from transmitter to me. It would have been easy to filter this noise out with a few more components inside the tool, but this would probably have added a little cost and clearly the main goal of this tool is low cost.2. The LED level indicator is useless as the 60hz noise referenced above triggers this indicator and on most of the breakers max this indicator out.3. It's very important to orient the wand attached to the receiver correctly. It must be held vertically against the face of the breaker.4. Listen for the distinct beep - beep - beep sound mixed in with the 60hz noise. When you put the wand on the correct breaker this beep will be loudest. In my case, you could hear the beep on 1-2 adjacent breakers, but not nearly as loud as the correct breaker.Giving this tool a 4 star rating is probably very generous, but it does work and the price is very good. I would imagine the more expensive tools have the appropriate filter to get rid of the 60hz noise. As an occasional user of this tool, I would rather save a few $$, but if you are a frequent user or a professional electrician this tool may not be for you.4Easy to use - a really neat toolIt doesn't come with instructions because they want to save paper, and I'm good with that. I actually found a youtube video that worked great.I personally had some confusion for a while, because I would put the transmitter into an outlet and sometimes I would get two or even three circuits that would indicate a signal. I was losing my mind for the longest time, thinking I had some crossed wires in the circuits, or that the tool was overly sensitive. I finally figured out that my dimmer switches in my house were emitting a signal similar to what the receiver was looking for. After I figured out that I needed to turn off those lights, everything worked great and it picked up the signal fabulously. I could easily map out my breaker box without having to run up and down the stairs, or shout to my husband, "How about now?"5A big letdownI bought this because I was changing out all of my electrical outlets and switches. I thought this device would make it a great time saver. I was wrong. the beeping sound that the transmitter emits through the wires bleeds through to other circuits, several at the same volume. It ends up becoming a guessing game, the same as it would have been without the tool. Don't waste your money.1The best breaker finder I've seen...Unlike every other breaker finder I've touched, this one actually plays the tones out loud. This may seem like a minor difference, but it sets up a literal game of high-voltage hot & cold. As soon as the probe tip gets anywhere near the right breaker, just follow the sound as it gets louder and it'll center on the exact one - literally NO guessing. There is also zero ambiguity when the right breaker is turned off - the sound drops out completely. The added bonus that the tone generator is also an outlet tester reduces extra stuff to carry around. The one complaint I have is the power switch is way too easy to slide - I keep it taped down so it doesn't drain its battery in my bag.5Fantastic Price for an Awesome Tool If You Read The Instructions TL;DR Fantastic price for a very useful tool. Works perfectly IF YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS (which you have to download from Sperry's website). Two prong transmitter means you can use this on older ungrounded outlets (common replacement scenario). Don't forget to shut off the receiver to clear calibration when switching transmitter location. Cheap build (expected for the price), not really contractor-grade.FULL REVIEWA number of reviewers seem to be confused about how to use this tool. I too, when I first opened it, went running off to try it without reading the instructions only to find out it didn't work. Well, it does work, if you read the instructions. What's different about the Sperry is that you have a trigger that is used for calibration where many of the competitors automatically calibrate. To calibrate YOU MUST firmly hold down the trigger and pass over the breakers. When you hear a beep you should STOP until the beeping stops and then proceed again with the trigger still held down. This might happen a couple of times depending on your wiring and the circuit you're testing. Once you've passed over all the breakers to calibrate you then MUST RELEASE the calibration trigger to scan for the circuit the transmitter is on.Once you find it you can verify you have the correct one by turning off the breaker and scanning again. This will save you a trip to where the transmitter is located. This device works as advertised and is a great time-saver and safety tool. I ding it one star for a trigger that you have to pull pretty firmly on to engage fully and a process that requires a bit more work than the competition. However, for the price savings over the competition, I think it's definitely worth it.4Great product. Took only 30 minutes to trace my ...Received it and immediately went about tracing outlets to circuit breakers. Works perfectly and is priced just right. Just plug the transmitter into an outlet, hold the receiver (the big one with the arrow) up to the transmitter, pull the receiver trigger and wait for the beeping to stop on the receiver. Release the trigger, go to the breaker box, and scan down the breakers. You will probably hear two or more breakers beeping. Re-scan the breakers while pulling the trigger, and keep rescanning until there's only one breaker remaining that beeps. That's the one. Great product. Took only 30 minutes to trace my complete breaker box!5Works as expected I kept reading bad reviews on this item. It actually discouraged me from purchasing it.What I needed to do at this certain house was trace all circuits to their perspective breaker. I tried using other methods and it took me for ever. The next time such a job was to be done again, I purchased it.Glad I did. It worked just as in some videos on YouTube showed. I have to say it was very fast tracing the circuits with this. You just have to know how to use it and have knowledge of what you're doing. The outlet tester was a plus! One f these alone is about 15-25$ so getting both tools for about 40$ was cool.Anyone wanting to purchase this item and paying too much attention to negative reviews will only regret not purchasing it and trying it out for themselves.Tools is very rugged also...One problem I did find, is that the outlet tester has the illustration of the lights on the bottom. So you would have to learn what the codes are if you don't know them so you don't find yourself looking under once plugged in. Other than that tool works great! 5worst tracer I have ever usedFirst did NOT sync with the transmitter! sent back. @nd one would NOT indicate which breaker the line was on, but only that the breaker BOX was receiving a signal! USELESS. A $9 from Harbor Freight worked perfectly! Sent this one back and stayed with my cheap one!1This Circuit Breaker finder works like a Champ ! After receiving the first unit and it was DOA. I was a little discouraged . But Amazon did a one day replacement and the 2nd one works like a champ. I am glad that I stuck with the purchase , because it has made my project a whole lot easier. The Circuit breaker finder works as easy as pie and I do not have to have two persons and a lot of yelling across the house to find the right breaker. Thanks to Amazons replacement policy and such great delivery service.Update : A couple of days use around the house, detecting all the plugins and switches to the circuit breakers I find this unit to work flawlessly.I would definitely recommend this tester 5Failed in less than two months. The circuit breaker tracker failed during the second time it was used. It was less than two months old and the transmitter no longer functions. I would have hoped it would have held up better. I will be shopping for another brand. 1Not a bad tool...I just had a new panel installed and not all of the breakers went back in the same place as the old one. Not so much of a big deal because the old one didn t have everything marked anyway. Over time I had identified some on my own as I did minor electrical repairs around the house. But being one person in a split foyer, it wasn t an easy task to run around flipping breakers willy-nilly. So I found this tool and was really excited to have an easier way to map out the new panel. This seems to be a great tool, and with the accessories it s quite versatile. I m not 100% convinced of its accuracy though. Sometimes it was dead on and gave a clear reading - other times not so much. Regardless of turning it off to clear it, it always wanted to hit on the #2 breaker the strongest. And there were some instances where it didn t seem to distinguish enough between the breakers and I still ended up having to do it the old fashioned way and just start flipping breakers. All in all it did make the task easier, but it was still a combination of old fashioned breaker flipping and this tool that got the job done.4Great tool! No more using night-lights plugged into outlets ... Great tool! No more using night-lights plugged into outlets and going back and forth from room to panel or yelling back and forth to see what circuit breaker controls an outlet or fixture. (For screw in light fixtures, you need to buy an outlet plug that screws into the light fixture socket so you can plug in the transmitter. Only improvement I can think of would be to include one in the kit, but you can buy them in any hardware store.) This, along with a Sperry non-contact voltage tester, definitely takes the frustration and uncertainty out of tracing unlabeled wires through attics and crawl spaces when adding or modifying circuits. 5
