Customer Reviews

Home use only, no server! This card is ok for regular home use, but it is to weak for server usage, I bought four and installed two to create NIC Team, both cards together work slower than one regular on-board LAN port. I tested each of these card with iperf3 software, on-board LAN port gives me ~910 Mbits/sec, StarTech card alone or in team gives me maximum ~$400 Mbit/sec. Anyway I tried to use two of them as backup-lan in server, but after year of usage one card starts to fall-out from the team every day. So, you get what you pay for. I replaced all of these StartTech network cards with normal fully hardware Intel NICs and did'n see any problems anymore. 3Working Fine on a X299 This NIC is working perfectly on a X299 motherboard with Intel i7 7800X. It's 100% 1 Gigabit NIC just as I wanted. The only issue that I HAD was while I installed it.The first problem was that the PCI-E pins was doing bad contact because the full-size bracket may not be compatible with my PC Case, or it could be that the Full-size bracket is not well designed for ATX Cases. Also the bracket has only a hole for the installation in the case, so, if your case has biggers screws (that shouldn't) or, like me, your case's hole is just 1mm away of the PCI-E slot as StarTech though, there could be a contact problem. My Solution was to not screw to the end, but leave a little space, and then push the card against the PCI-E slot one more time. The another problem that I had may not be related to this NIC, but to my Motherboard (or to the first issue), and was that while turning on my PC for the first time with the NIC, it fails to boot (I think that there wasn't any post screen). I don't know how did I solved this, but after 3 retries, the PC boots with a warning Message about the PCI-E Slot (a feature of the chipset where the slot that I used could disable some SATA ports). After the first successful boot, I didn't have this problem anymore. 4easy to install Seeing a forum report that said Intel no longer has a lan network division, ( I did not confirm it, but it influenced my decision on whom to purchase from) I sought other sellers on Amazon to upgrade an older computer that recently went to Windows 10. I needed a reliable lan network card. It uses a Realtek based adapter ( fyi). OK, easy to install.... but the drivers that were available a few weeks ago did not say Windows 10. I chatted tech support and they said their older windows 8 drivers would work. They did, but only to 100. (sorry star tech). But Today, (1-8-2017) after shopping Amazon for a possible better choice, I saw Realtek now has Windows 10 drivers! ( on their website) Yup... and they work folks. So download..... clicked setup... chose "repair" it removed the older driver... installed the correct driver, and now the Speedtest says 134.56 and I pin the meter for a few brief seconds. So yes, quality adapter given the right drivers... and I am happySo good review of this device. It always did work... but works better now. 4Works with pfSense Worked flawlessly. The two port express card is definitely over-priced, but it was cheaper than buying more hardware and a network card when I already had an old laptop I could use. I setup an old Sony Vaio laptop with a 10/100 ethernet port, adding this card gave it dual gigabit ports. I installed pfSense on the laptop and the ports were recognized immediately and the setup was simple. The only concern I have is that it can be removed very easily and pfSense doesn't seem to recognize it unless you reboot the machine if it ever comes out of the express card slot. 534mm Gigabit Ethernet Laptop ExpressCard It allowed me to add Gigabyte speed to my HP DV5-1119nr laptop at a very reasonable price. I did not need any drivers ( already has a realtek 10/100 card drivers ) it connect right away and it does not slow down the computer or CPU by adding the ExpressCard Adapter. It is made of metal and plastic, you need to by a slot adapter to make the 34 mm fit in a 54 mm slot. The Ethernet connector stands out a bit and can make it easy to snap off the end, if tugged or yanked.Overall performance is good, went from 20 to 30 MBPS download speeds to 84 to 97 MBPS download speeds. Copying 4 GB files from laptop to network share the took 2 to 3 hours now takes 3 minutes or less. Webpage load faster and surfing is more enjoyable. I know it is a 10 year old laptop but it runs Windows 7 64bit and with the Gigabyte adapter it work just as good or if not better than most current laptops. 5Piece of garbage I own a software company so I'm not a novice on installing adapters. This one came and I installed it. Windows 7 couldn't find the drivers for it and when I tried to install the drivers from the CD it said they were the wrong drivers. 2 hrs of trying everything I could my screen went blank. The computer would not boot up. After many tries I took the card out and the computer booted. In all my years (over 30) of building, repairing and programing computers I've never had this problem. I guess now I'll go with an Intel set of driver adapter and see what happens. 1DEFECTIVE or JUNK. Would give NO STARS if I could Am not a novice at installing pci cards in pc's. Tried to install this on a Win 10 pc. Didn't work, not even with the Win10 drivers downloaded from the StarTech site (which by the way, are actually Realtek drivers). Device Manager only shows this as "PCI Device". Tried it on a Win7 pc ...same problem. Also would not install on a WinXP pc either. The return window has passed, so am stuck with this piece of junk and out my money. The only up side to this order is that the seller shipped & delivered it in a timely manner. 1I was having a good deal of trouble with my internet connection before purchasing ... I was having a good deal of trouble with my internet connection before purchasing and installing this product. There were a number of issues with connection latency and packet loss which my ISP was unable to troubleshoot after numerous calls to Tech Support and having Technicians out to my home. One of those techs mentioned the possibility that the issue may lie with my onboard LAN controller and I decided to take a gamble and buy this add-on card to offer an alternative connection to the cable modem. It seems to have solved the problem beautifully, as since installing I have had no issues. Installation was simple for someone with at least a basic knowledge of desktop construction, and I was able to complete during my lunch break. The product was immediately recognized by Windows 7 with no driver software required and began working within a few minutes. Overall I am pleased with the outcome and with this product. I would recommend to anyone who is looking to add additional LAN connections to their desktop, and for those looking for multiple connections (for in-home or small office server applications), there are multi-port versions of the product available. 4Needed Gigabit LAN solution for dead MacBook Pro port... I tested the 3 main brands of these that Amazon stocks in my MACBOOK PRO, I did not test windows functionality. There is a clear winner of the 3 and that is the StarTech one. Why: the ONLY one of these that includes a full-sized driver CD in the box. They should know these will be used in laptops and you CANNOT put an 8cm CD in a slot-loading CD drive! Mac drivers, tight slot connection, and having the smallest cable connection module were the winning points for me.Pro/Cons...StarTech Pros: smallest point of cable connection module, full-size driver CD, best "retention" strength in the slot, lifetime warranty, great support website, readily available MAC & Win drivers for the Realtek 81xx chip, didn't get warm at all.StarTech Cons: it is the most $$$ out of the 3, but still only 35 bucks.StarTech.com 1 Port ExpressCard Gigabit Laptop Ethernet NIC Network Adapter Card (EC1000S)I/O Crest Pros: cheapest of the 3, middle-sized point of cable connection module.I/O Crest Cons: worst support website, NO MAC DRIVER for this Agere ET-131x chip, weak slot "retention", only 8cm driver CD, gets pretty warm, only 1 year warranty.I/O Crest Gigabit Ethernet 34mm ExpressCard SY-EXP24006Syba Pros: doesn't get very warm, readily available drivers for the Realtek 81xx chipSyba Cons: 1 year warranty, only 8cm driver CD, weakest slot "retention", very LARGE-blocky point of cable connection module: it sticks WAY out & way UP makes it easy to bump & it slips out killing connection.Syba SD-EXP24010 ExpressCard 34mm Gigabit LAN Network CardI have posted pictures of all 3 side-by-side in the customer images section, you can see the port module sizes there. 5Perfect plug and play solution for Windows 10 Great little card that is just plug and play for Windows 10. The card comes with a driver disk, but I didn't even need to take it out of it's sleeve, as I dropped it in an open slot in a PC, connected the LAN cable to the router and the card and fired up the computer. It just worked right out of the box, with Windows taking care of setup and I was up and running in less than 2 minutes. Great card, fast speeds as well and a perfect solution for a PC whose LAN port died, and a WiFi dongle has proved to be unreliable in the location or PC I had it in. Great purchase, this is probably the one you want. 5
