Bystrica, Slovakia, 1944. During Allied bombing, a little girl prays for freedom.

Chicago, 1979. Father Frank Shore, a priest and postulator, investigates a statue of the Virgin Mary shedding bloody tears and the mysterious healing of a girl suffering from a terminal illness. These miracles are believed to be the work of Helen O'Reagan, a woman who died a year earlier and who may be beatified as a result of these events. Father Frank, known for exposing countless false miracles, has never experienced a true divine event and has been experiencing a severe spiritual crisis for some time. During his investigations, he discovers extraordinary events, one of which involves Roxana, Helen's daughter, who is an atheist and cannot forgive her mother, guilty of abandoning her at the age of 15.
