Customer Reviews

Reliable/compact/Flush mounting It's pretty expensive to upgrade my 500GB SSD on newer Macs so I just popped this little 256GB SD card into my My Macbook Pro and I leave it there. It's like an instant upgrade to 756GB.Of course it's not as fast as the internal boot drive but the extra space helps a lot.The only other negative is it was pretty expensive when I bought it . 5Be wary of limitations I have to give this a solid "meh." Although Transcend cannot shoulder all of the blame here, users should be wary when considering this solution. Apple's laptops apparently put the USB controller asleep in such a way that the card can be "ejected" when the machine sleeps without being able to remount the drive until it is physically removed and then re-inserted. This surprise/accidental eject causes havoc with open applications that have files working on the drive.Transcend does make a tool to mitigate this (check out their JetDriveToolbox,) but it is incompatible with encryption of the drive. Given that the drive is easily removable encryption is a must. Additionally the kludge has issues if you don't type in your password fast enough under OSX.Installing Windows has a similar issue as well. 3Not very seamless Computer often wakes from sleep and the drive doesn't remount. Their app that is supposed to run in the background and insure this doesn't happen does not work reliably. Have had to create a Bash script to reload the SDHC drivers on demand in order to remount the drive when this happens.Overall it wasn't as seamless as I was hoping. Occasionally TImeMachine considers the drive to be entirely new and backs the whole thing up again. Shortcuts to Music or Pictures that OS X expects on the main volume don't work as well on a sometimes disappearing "external" drive. If I had to do it over, I'd save the money and just upgrade my entire "MAC HD" 512GB SSD to a 1TB drive instead. 4Prefect fit, with a little sticking out intentionally! I love the options of being able to select different JetDirve versions for my need, especially the ability to select "longer" version so it is easy to insert or remove the drives from the laptop slots. I have at home MacBook Air 13", MacBook Pro retina 13" and MacBook Pro 15" retina, all of them are mid to late 2013 versions. For my own MacBook Pro 15", the "correct" version is supposed to be JetDrive Lite 360. However, after checking the specifications on the manufacture's web site, I realized that Lite 350 version is actually a little longer, and many online reviews mentioned that it might be difficult to remove those drives if they fits too tight and close to the edge of the MacBook. Being a frequent digital camera user, I need the SD card slot for my camera memory card downloading. I don't want the hassle of peeling the card off the card slot. The Lite 350 version does stick out about 3 - 4 mm from the slot, but the benefit of easy removal would save me much time and less headache in the long run. So far, I have never experienced any hit or obstruction because of the small extrusion.Same thing for our MacBook Pro retina 13" which is supposed to use Lite 330, but I got Lite 360 for it to make sure I have the extra edge sticking out. As a matter of fact, our MacBook Air has to use the Lite 130, the longest version, and it fits snugly right to the edge of the MacBook: so comfortable that it is the hardest one to pull out! Those cards fit the MacBook SD card slot very tight, and it is very unlikely to accidentally remove or damage by daily use or carrying around. I admit somebody might not like the cosmetic appearance of the sticking out card, but you get another benefits: you can see the printed card size from the stick out strips, making it easy for me to know which card I am using without going through the Finder! No need to say more about the performance. These cards are very fast, and I have no problem watching full screen HD videos off the drive. I highly recommend it for all MacBook users. 5Expanding your MacBook Pro and Air inexpensively One of the few deficiencies associated with solid state drive equipped Macs is the comparatively small size of internal storage. In an era where 500 GB is the norm and even 1 TB is common, a 256 GB drive is small. When I bought my 15 inch Mac Book Pro with Retina Display, I rationalized that with iCloud and other cloud storage options the loss of half of my hard drive would be find compensation in the increased speed and reliability of a SSD. To some extent those assumptions were correct. Nonetheless I often found myself managing drive utilization trying to keep at least 10% of the total storage space open.Transcend provides a solution. For slightly less than $80 and a Jet Drive Lite 350 I have increased my drive space by fifty percent. The Transcend Jet Drive Lite is essentially a High Capacity SD card which installs into one of the existing SD ports on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. There are four different model cards, and you should carefully consider the chart before ordering. Each card is tailored for specific machines and is designed to be inserted into the port and lie more of less flush against the case, not sticking out like a normal SD card. The normal card can be spring ejected. This is not so with the Jet Drive Lite. It is very difficult to remove, and since it is in effect a secondary SSD that permanency is a virtue. I have inadvertently "ejected" the card fin the Finder only to discover it simply disconnects. The simplest recovery mode is to log out and then log back in and the drive is automatically recognized. The card comes in a box, with warranty information, and nothing else. The limited lifetime warranty, if you can read it without an electron microscope, is quite good. You should make sure however that your card data on it is being backed up regularly. I use Time Capsule and the setting on installation excluded the Jet Drive Lite. I think the reason for this is that the drive appears to your Mac to be no more than a temporary SD card and SD cards are not backed up unless you change your settings. So having a card and an open port I pressed it in. Since the card doesn't eject, there is no "click" associated with my effort. However an icon appeared immediately on my desktop, and I knew my MBP was reading the drive. My first thought was that I would move all my photos and videos to the Transcend Jet Drive Lite 350. Immediately I received a message- "The destination disk is not properly formatted."Indeed it was not, and that is peculiar. We are looking at a product designed exclusively for newer Apple laptops, and the card was FAT formatted. It takes less than a minute to reformat the card to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)Once the disk was reformatted I moved my entire Aperture Library to the Jet Drive Lite . I am a lawyer, not a technician, but it seemed to me that the transfer speed was quite fast, at least as fast as my USB 3.0 flash drive and possibly as fast as a Thunderbolt device. All in all, the Transcend Jet Drive Lite meets a lot of my needs. The price and the huge capacity should justify you giving it a try. 5So Far, So Good (edit: 1 Year Later, Still Good) So far, after four weeks of use, this is working extremely well. When I got my Retina Macbook Pro, I was disappointed with the SSD capacity choices, and have always been irritated with the work required to maintain at least 10 GB of open space required for the RAM image to be written to storage upon sleep (especially as Apple is so liberal in taking up large amounts of storage space with data libraries, mobile backups, photo streams and the like). Having an extra 128 GB handy is a lifesaver. You'll have to make an immediate decision as to formatting: the default ExFAT format is better for transferring large files, but can slow to a crawl when reading or writing folders filled with tons of files. You'll probably want to go with the HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) file system, which has better performance for Macs overall. (Open the Disk Utility app included in your Mac, in the Applications > Utilities folder; click on the Transcend Card icon at left, go to the Erase tab at right, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) below that, give the disk a name you desire, and click Erase.)It is best, of course, to choose a format right away instead of having to save the files on the card elsewhere and then re-load them. You may want to experiment with both formats and look at transfer speeds you get, trying with large files and folders filled with small files, before going with one format or the other. However, don't expect this card, using any formatting, to be anywhere near as fast as your SSD, or even as fast as an external USB3 HDD. It is what it is.My own worry is in how long this will last. I have had a lot of SD cards crap out on me over time. Will this one last at least a few years? Only time will tell. If something adverse happens, I'll come back and revise this.Edit: One year later, and it still works like it did when I first got it. Very nice! 5Good expansion memory, but ... I bought the 128 GB version of this card for use on my MacBook Pro. it sits comfortably in the sd slot flush with the side of the laptop and is hardly noticeable and, since I also use Transcend cards in my digital camera and have not had any trouble with them, I felt comfortable using one of their cards as expansion memory.I bought this specifically to hold the digital raw images my family takes when traveling for processing so that they don't take up space on my main SSD which is only 512 GB. The card works well, although it is noticeably slower than my SSD, and I have found that some photo editing software has a problem processing images if they reside on the card. In addition, since the card is designed to sit in the sd slot semi-permanently (it can be removed but, since it is flush with the laptop case, that takes a bit of doing) it also prevents me from easily copying photos directly from my camera's sd card. That made me buy a usb sd card reader. So, some good and some bad. The card is a nice size (although I would have liked 256 GB), it works well and its use is largely transparent since there is nothing sticking out from the side of the machine. On the other hand there are problems, although they are not specifically problems with the card itself. All in all a mixed bag, but mostly positive. A good choice, with some drawbacks, if you are limited in your SSD space. 4Great Product. Hardly noticeable. Easy to forget about! I have used this card for more than two years and never had any problems with it. I actually forgot that I had it for a long time, since it integrated with my MacBook so nicely. The only time I realize, that I have it, is the rare occasion I have to use the SD slot for an actuall camera SD card. It is super easy to remove though.I am now at a point, where I have a small adapter for when I need to use a SD card and just leave this storage extension permanently in the MacBook.Recommendation: If you have only a small SSD in you MacBook, this will definitely help you a lot. I would buy it again! 5Fits firmly, securely. Write speeds are inconsistent but great reads This is a great product especially for Macbook Air owners who are always tight on space. It's probably the least expensive way to double or almost triple your available space for under $100 provided you don't need to use the SD card slot on your Mac.The card is essentially a cut down SD card that snaps in securely and sits flush with the side of your Macbook Pro or Macbook Air (be sure to pick the version specific to your Mac model). The card stays firmly in place and requires a bit of effort to remove - I found sliding a finger nail underneath the sides is enough to pry it loose. I worry that over time the side of the card might weaken but so far I've removed the card at least a dozen times with no apparent signs of anything snapping off.One thing to note is that this is far from an SSD replacement. In fact the write speeds are all over the place, with sequential writes as low as 12 megabytes per second and occasionally as high as 50. Generally in my testing with the Blackmagic disk benchmark the writes were under 20 megabytes per second. Reads, however, were much better and more consistent running anywhere from 60 to 87 megabytes per second.Oddly the drive doesn't come formatted for the Mac's native file system. It's formatted with the more universal ExFAT system that's compatible with most computing platforms. I strongly suggest converting it to the Mac HFS+ Journaled format through disk utility so that Time Machine will include the Transcend card with its regular backups. I do suggest checking your time machine volume from time to time to ensure that the drive is properly backed up.Overall this is a nice product that will safely add a significant amount of storage to a Macbook Pro Retina or Air. I just wish the write speeds were more consistent. 4Allows dual boot on MACBOOK Pro I installed this in the side slot on my 2012 MACBOOK PRO (10,1) , reformatted for MAC OS Extended (Journaled), then loaded LION on it while running the latest version on my internal HD; hold option key at power on allows me to choose which OS to boot from, so I can use my outdated music software (Apple Logic 9) while still maintining the latest for my work requirements on the internal drive. --EXACTLY what I needed. 5
