Customer Reviews

Please read this if you want video selections for a fraction of the cost! For small dollars, I purchased this 4 port router to use along with Trendnet Powerline Adapters. Along with a high speed internet modem and provider of internet services I am able to stream in internet video, like Amazon Prime Video, at any location in my house that has an electrical outlet. That's right, any electrical outlet anywhere in the house. You have to have a TV that has an HDMI port to do this. I do no have any wireless going on that can be picked up by people passing by in a car or neighbors and am internally hardwired through the electrical system of my home. I do not have dropped signal, HD tvs bring in an HD picture, and the load time is fast. I can start and stop a show, Resume where I left off, or turn off the tv in one room and resume the same show in another. I just turned in my last cable box and only have the minimal cable necessary to bring down the cost of good high speed by buying a package. My Amazon Prime subscription has more video selections than I could every watch and the money I save on cable boxes helps pay the annual Amazon Subscripton. Hopefully, Trendnet will continue manufacturing this great device and step up to more robust speeds as they inevitably present themselves from year to year. There needs to be much more publicity about this gadget. 5Simple to use router.I like it. Its simple and easy to use/setup. For some reason though i cant fully figure out how to port forward with it (thats why 4 stars) but i was able to dmz my server and just use the windows server firewall instead. Wouldve been nice to be able to just port forward instead of dmz but not a big deal. If you need an ethernet before your wifi router with much easier setup use then i highly recomend it.I use it between my modem and my wifi router for my pc and server. Then have it go to my wifi router which i didnt have to change any settings on both to get the internet on my wifi.4Dynamic IP doesn't work, which most users need.Dynamic IP simply won't work. I called their tech support which couldn't figure it out and had me manually enter a static IP. This won't work reliably as my ISP may change my IP address at anytime. Instead of buying this POS, buy this Belkin :https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004N625AA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1for the same price or any other brand name wifi router and turn off the wifi. If you buy a router with older WiFi technology, you can get it cheap and just use the wired functionality.1Router works great now.Worked for several days trying to get it to connect to the wan port. Was able to get two differentrouters to work with little effort on the same network. It may just be bad. It cost less than twenty dollarsand not worth sending it back. I just chalk it up to learning, and remember the name. When I installed it in the network, the network shut down. I changed my mind about keeping the router.Amazon made it so easy to return that I ordered a replacement. If the replacement works as advertised, Iwill write a proper review, or edit this one. (Edited review) Amazon sent a replacement router in a few days. It works great witha few simple steps to configure it. After having installed the new one without any problems, the first one may have been good too.I may have not understood the instructions. Anyway, Thanks Amazon.2Happy Little Router with a Couple of FlawsIt's a capable, set-and-forget router that does the usual: DHCP, NAT, port mapping, restricting client access (time of day, MAC address), basic firewall functions (dropping port mapping, stopping pings), etc. If not of that means anything to you, you can just do an automatic set up and forget about it.Two drawbacks:1) No reserved IP addresses for DHCP. That's a star and half off. I can't assign consistent IP addresses to things like my NAS boxes and printers, which is a pain. Bonjour solves most of that, but I still have to do MAC address lookups periodically to verify that no unauthorized devices are connected to my network. Same devices don't identify themselves by name (I'm looking at *you*, Amazon Echo).2) I did have to restart it once in the three months I've had it. That was probably due to my ISP modem glitching on the WAN side, but it's still one more time than I had to restart my D-Link in over 12 years. Another half star reduction.3Perfect addition to my wired network that includes firewall protectionCompact design with all the features of the expensive routers. For my basic network there was no need to go through hoops just plug and play and that's a big plus. I experienced an issue with the setup of my Home Network but with very little effort on my part TRENDnet solved all my issues and I have a faster and happy little workgroup once again. Through the TRENDnet.com Support website and Amazon's ask a question the response time and solving of my issue was super fast. THANK YOU TRENDnet for your expertise and ease of contacting for support.5Fast Router, Easy SetupI bought this Trendnet to replace an old Netgear router, which was still working fine, except it couldn't keep Outlook connected to its remote Exchange server. I suspected that the old router was too slow to handle the RPC over http (Exchange Proxy) connection that Outlook uses, but I wasn't sure. So I was looking for a new and ultra-low-cost router to see if it would fix the problem. This router solved the problem immediately - in fact Outlook connects faster from home now than it does at the office. This router was easy to install and set up. At first I was reluctant to switch brands because I was already familiar with configuring Netgear routers (I also have a Netgear wireless router configured as an access point.) But I didn't have any trouble navigating the admin screens for the Trendnet. I connected my Netgear wireless router to one port of the Trendnet as a wireless access point and it works perfectly.(Why two routers? My home office with its several computers is located at a corner of the house - a poor location for the wireless router. So the Trendnet router stays in the office. A cable runs from the Trendnet to a centrally located closet, where the Netgear wireless router lives. Some special configuration of the routers is required for this setup - it's explained on the Netgear web site.)My only complaint about the Trendnet is the red flashing status light. According to the documentation that came with my router this light was supposed to be green, so I was trying to figure out what problem was causing it to flash red. Eventually I discovered that "OK" is now flashing red, not green. Personally I'd prefer a green light for OK - the flashing red can be distracting.I hope that this router will prove as reliable as my Netgear routers have been.5Does the job I have two of these little routers. I purchased one about 6 months ago to replace a defective router on my Verizon FIOS service and did not want to spend a lot of money because I was in the process of moving, and already had installed a router in my new home. (Now, I know Verizon will send me a replacement for the Verizon provided router for free, but it is too much hassle dealing with their technical folks.)This little Trendnet router performs as good as the original router. I have the 25/25 megabit FIOS service, and I still get 25 up and down with this little guy.I still have not sold the house, and as of 6 months the little router is still working fine.I also use Dynamic DNS from dyn.com, and it properly updates dyn.com and allows for the correct routing of incoming packets.I purchased a second unit about 3 months ago to use with my Time Warner Cable Internet service at a vacation home. Works fine with this also. The first router has an Apple Time Capsule connected to it for wireless access. The TC is set up in 'bridge' mode so there is no double NAT. The second router has an Apple Air-Port Express connected to it for wireless access, also in bridge mode. No troubles. It is not a fancy, but gets the job done for me. I have never had to reset either of these routers, which is good since I use both of them to monitor my Internet accessible thermostats and cameras that are at these properties. For the money a very good purchase.UPDATE March 23, 2013:Router still working fine at my house in FL. Sold the house in CT. Comcast just upgraded my service to 50 mbit, and it handles the faster service with no issues. I have a lot of IP devices in my house: Apple AirPort wireless access points (set up in Bridge mode), DirecTV receivers wired to the Internet, 5 Internet thermostats (wired), iPads, iPhones, PCs, several Mac computers, two ApppleTVs, another IPTV box for international programming for my wife who is from Russia. I just checked, and there were 33 devices getting IP addresses from the router's DHCP server. No problems, I have never had to reset this router. Video on demand from DirecTV, AppleTV, and IPTV box works fine. IPTV is on all day, steaming in Hi Def. Yes, it is pretty simple, but in works great. 5Never worked for meI bought this several months ago in hopes of replacing my wireless router. I bought an Eero wireless mesh system and it works so well there was no need for a "second" wireless signal from my existing wireless router. Every time I try to switch, I encounter a very frustrating problem. My cable modem instantly displays a flashing red light rather than its normal blue light. Needless to say, no internet signal gets sent to any other devices and I'm dead in the water. I've tried turning everything else off, rebooting the modem, computer, etc. - nothing works. As soon as I go back to my old wireless router, everything works perfectly again. It seemed like such a simple, inexpensive solution but there is nothing "plug and play" about it.1A quality router for a good priceTRENDnet has always made some very good routers, and this little router is no exception. I have used the same Linksys router for 10years and it was time to retire it. However, finding a quality wired router was very hard it turns out. In the end I stumbled across this router and began to do some research into it.the TW100-S4W1CA is actually the 4th version of this router. It was originally produced in 2006 and went through multiple changes (v1.0 v1.0r v1.1 and v1.1r) v1.1r was produced in 2009 i believe and contains the latest firmware (Jan 2008) The original versions of this router had a different design and a blinking "red" status light. The latest version changed it to a blinking GREEN light. I received a v1.1r which is the latest (sometimes you might end up with a 1.1 and some sites are even selling v1.0 originals which is very strange since Trendnet doesn't produce those anymore)Anyhow, the router design itself is ultra simple. This is a $40 router normally so compared to a $80 linksys you will see some differences. The plastic casing is light weight and kind of feels fragile next to my old linksys w/ heady duty plastic or better yet, my netgear SPI firewall router(which broke in about a year) which has a metal case. However you aren't exactly throwing this thing around so for a device that sits on a counter, the light weight plastic design is helpful to keep it cool ; it just has this TOY look to it. The ports in the back are plastic w/ metal pins to hold the RJ45's in place. Simple but it works. The lights themselves are very simple and not over glaring (like the Gaming Routers from D-Link which actually can hurt your eyes if you look into them because of how bright they are).A proper functioning v1.1r model will have a "solid green" power light. "flashing green status" "Green WAN light that flickers w/ activity" and the port w/ a network cable attached will be SOLID GREEN that flickers with activity.FIRMWARE / SETUP-- TRENDnet routers use some of the best router firmware on the market. It is done by an outside company which specializes in networking firmware and software, and supposedly they are one of the best. The firmware is windows/OS based, meaning when you hook up the router and get going, input your router IP and it will have a browser based firmware which will be like surfing webpages. This keeps it very simple for people who aren't familiar with networking since it lets them put in help bars, extra tool tips and make things look much nicer.-- CABLE users this router works out of the box w/o even a need for setup . DSL users and others will require minor setup but this is easy as there are 2 setup methods1. BASIC/QUICK. This setup is pretty much 4 steps. Time, Network IP, Network information, LAN settings in other words, the router will ask you to set your time, select your ISP provider (cable, dsl, etc), input network information if required by your ISP, clone your MAC ID(required if your ISP only grants you 1 IP based on your PC's network card)** I didn't have to clone my MAC ID for it to work, but my friend bought this same router and he had to so well, this is a case by case basis. If the router is not working out of the box, CLONE MAC ID in the quick setup step. After doing that the router worked perfect for my friend.2. ADVANCED. This setup avoids all the steps. Instead you are taken to a setup page that has all the firmware tabs. WAN, LAN, SETUP, FIREWALL etc Within each tab are options to use. This is for advanced users as tweaking a few things here can screw up stuff. However in the advanced setup menu you can go to LAN and change your router IP address, the IP ranges the router hands out, lease time etc. You also can set up DMZ, firewall features, port forwarding etc. Everything is well organized and help options are everywhere (it is so much similar than my old Linksys)** In the FIREWALL option there is a feature called "BLOCK WAN IP" I personally would enable this. Basically this prevents the router from receiving "pings" on the WAN side (via your ISP). Now if you enable this and suddenly you lose internet then disable the option . Some ISP's do ping your network to make sure you are there. However most ISP's will not, instead HACKERS will ping along the network looking for a response. if you do not block your wan pings, you ping back and the hacker spots you and moves in for the kill. Is it necessary, no... but it is nice to have enabled.OVERALLShort story here, this router is a fantastic wired router. I call it "the little router that could.... and then some" as this router is half the size of my old Linksys yet has 8x the throughput (80Mbps WAN to LAN). This router has a very simple design, with very high quality firmware that makes it very simple to setup while catering to advanced users. I highly recommend this router for its price (currently $24). While you will get a very cheap looking router, the insides are HIGH QUALITY. Just look past the toy design and you'll see this has some high quality parts inside of it and that's what counts in the end. It works... and it works well.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this router if you are looking for a high speed wired router that can handle multiple computers and devices.CONSLike all great things, there are a few negatives to this router (minor ones)1. Port 113 CLOSED not stealth. STEALTH is just an imaginary term by GRC testing. Basically it means your port isn't visible or responding to outside data access that was not requested. Is this bad? Not really because this router contains "Block WAN PING" . My Old Linksys and Netgear routers did not have Block WAN PING but did have Port 113 filter. So pretty much it is one or the other from the research I did. You can filter port 113 (make it stealth) or just have the router block all PING requests from the WAN side.2. Setup CD. I get so annoyed with these. Honestly, these Setup CD's cause more problems than they resolve. In fact some CD's wont even work on Windows Vista or Windows 7 . These CD's are really designed for users with Windows 95, 98 and 2000 where you had to configure high speed internet manually. XP, Vista and Win7 all have automatic configuration wizards. You should not have to use the CD to get this to work if you are on XP, Vista or Win7 (UPnP is enabled by default)5I Love It ; ) Thanks Trendnet! This Is A Hard Wired Router. Sometimes, Old School Is Better School.Bought another 2 of these guys based on info that hardwired routers are being phased out. I have a total of 4 of these routers now. 1 is active in use and 3 in reserve. There is a big push from big $$$ corps to get people on wireless routers and thus, the sheep follow. Then, you have wireless hacks who can spend a certain amount of money and buy equipment to penetrate wireless routers even with the most elaborate pass codes. The consequences can be extremely embarrassing. So; with that said, this unit is strictly hardwired and therefore there's no "oops" I bumped into the wi-fi button or "oops" the router did a reset when the power went out and a hack got in. Helps when dealing with potential wireless hacks. One more very, very inexpensive tool out of many to help defend against cyber attacks. Compatible with Cox's Premier Plan 100 meg and super fast. I am very happy ; )5Works great. Took some time to setup for reasons. It will not renew IP Addresses via DHCP as chosen. I reduced the lease time but that did not work.I have cable with Comcast. It took about 4 hours to setup. To make a long story shorter, I used the Advanced Setup. The Quick Setup asks for the Primary and Secondary DNS Servers which Comcast does not supply. This took some time for trial and error plus working with Comcast tech support which was not helpful. Comcast uses Dynamic DNS. Figured that out on my own. So, here is what I did; assuming the hardware setup was done properly:1. Select Advance Setup.2. Select "WAN" on the left navigation pane.3. Under "WAN" select "Dynamic DNS"4. Check "Use Dynamic DNS".5. Entered hsd1.ca.comcast.net for "Host Name". (Your hostname may be different or it may not matter to have it. I will toy with that later)6. Left the "Service Provider" at its default. Left Username/Password blank.7. Click on "Apply"I then rebooted my PC and it worked just fine. I have wired and wireless devices on my network. At first my PC would hang after restart because resources were being used to resolve its IP address. I figured out that my Wireless Access Point was not configured to be on the router's subnet. After fixing that, everything went well.2I could not be more pleased It could not have been easier to install. It worked right away. I get fabulous connection speeds (95 download & 89 Mbps upload). My needs are very basic, hook up three computers to the same router. I usually have only one computer on the net at a time. If your needs are this simple, and you're not a network guru, this is probably the router for you. 5
