Customer Reviews

Works like a charm - until the thermal fuse trips. Sloppy design. First of all, it works, and the disks seem to last a long while. Many reviews are complaining about chewing through the disks rapidly, so I ended up buying several for a work that involved stripping polyurethane from concrete pavers that span my entire backyard - but nope, just a single disk did the trick. It worked a lot better than paint strippers and pressure washing, too. Now, I'm taking away two starts because there is a non-resettable fuse inside that blows when the windings get to about 200 F. That would be fine, except that the device can heat up pretty quickly when doing more serious jobs (such as my concrete stripping project). And bam - without any warning, the device is dead. Judging from the reviews, many other people have bumped into the same problem.A resettable circuit would have been a much better choice and would have costed them just a tiny bit more - I mean, we're talking 50 cents or something. You can obviously replace or get rid of the fuse if you're adventurous and don't mind voiding warranties, but people who aren't particularly savvy with electronics will need to send it back. 3Works as advertised I have 13 old oak doors in my old house. They have about 8 coats of paint on each door - the top 4 are latex paint and the bottom 4 are oil based enamel from what I can tell. I have tried orbital sanders, belt sanders, paint strippers and heat guns. All of them can get through the latex, but it takes hours to get through the enamel that has been on for decades. I had the most success with the heat gun and scraper, but it still took me about 8-10 hours a door to strip the paint. I bought the Paint Eater and tried it for about 15 minutes tonight. It chewed right through the latex like it was nothing and after a few passes made it through the enamel. I got about 1/2 of one side of the door completed - definitely a time saver and stripped it clean down to the bare wood.I do have a few complaints though... The motor is 2600 RPM's, so when you pass over the paint it will sometimes bite it really hard and throw you around a bit - it took me off guard the first time and it nearly flew right off my table. Definitely need 2 hands and a tight grip to hold onto this thing. It spins so fast that if you leave it in one area too long it will begin to melt the paint which just spins the paint around and clogs up your pad. Also, after only 15 minutes it got so hot that it was uncomfortable to hold around the motor and when I stopped smoke was coming off of it - I assume the paint chips that were trapped in the arbor.Overall, the few complaints don't outweigh the time that this has saved me just from my little test tonight. The pads seem a little pricey, but it will probably be about the same price as the amount of sanding discs I was using before for each door. 53x3 area...turned on 2x...5 min of work...stopped working Excited to see this item eat paint. I have a painted front porch that needs stripped and repainted. Figured this would cut my time in half. Ordered on 6/25, arrived 6/27, unboxed 6/28. The item was as described visually. Went and plugged it in and began on a small area. Didnt apply too much pressure. Turned item off to scoot over to get another area. Fired it up and item was noticeably hot. Turned it off and inspected it visually. Tried firing it up again and nada/nothing. Would not turn back on. Checked my breakers thought I blew a fuse. Nope that wasn't it. Went over to another outlet and gave it a try. Again nothing. Checked the warranty called the customer service help desk and the rep had no answer for me other than that should not happen and he has never heard of that happening before. Should of checked the reviews as this has happened before. So all in all worked a 3x3 area and turned it on twice for a total of 5 min. I'm not disappointed in my purchase bc these things happen but I will be returning and not repurchasing. 1What an AWESOME product! 10 STARS! I'm 73 years old and find myself power washing and sanding and painting a wooden clapboard sided 115 year old house. I read the reviews and thought I'm going to give the Paint Eater a try and boy have I been happy I did. I bought the 30 Second Outdoor Cleaner, an inexpensive power washer at the store that rymes will "harbor great" and the paint eater. Wow what a great combination! In the beginning I used the paint eater first and then power washed but reversed doing it that way. Using the power washer first I was able to remove a lot of loose flaking paint and dirt and scum using the 30 Second Outdoor Cleaner, applied with a Smith Contractor 3 gallon sprayer purchased on Amazon. I would give each product 10 stars if I could. I did replace the 3M pad on the paint eater, which was a breeze, about half way through, but that was probably too soon. I kept the used one for later.Anyway, I love Amazon and will end up with a painted house 10 times more thorough than when I did it 18 years ago using a scraper and putty knife! 5May be better for less intense projects Got this to remove paint off a high ceiling on my porch because it's light weight. Doesn't remove the paint well at all. Have to keep it in one place so long the paint starts to melt and get sticky. May be better for less intense projects. 2PaintEater is a good name - power scraper and sander all in one. There is a certain joy in using a power tool to do a job previously done by hand. Just watch re-runs of Tim Allen. A PaintEater is to a scraper like a power washer is to a bucket and sponge.Yes, you could scrape and sand but finally there is a power tool to do both at once. The important thing is it's all ready to paint when done.A whole house would take a while, but a day with a PaintEater would replace a week of scraping and sanding.I keep saying both because it you want a good job you have to feather the paint or it will look like crap when you paint and the paint will likely peel off the old paint you did not remove unless you rough up the surface. 5Great little paint remover (or better a paint scraper) Great little paint remover (or better a paint scraper). Does a great job of scraping paint, smoothing it out, and feathering in the edges making for a much nicer paint job, will remove light paint coatings. If your looking to remove six coats of heavy floor paint of off your porch or deck go rent a floor sander with #20 grit paper, You would not use you reciprocating saw to cut down a 24 inch oak tree, you'd use a chain saw. If you don't have unreasonable expectations you will be very satisfied with this little unit. will it last? I'll update, have just used it for one day. Definitely worth the purchase price at this point. 5Does a nice job for basic sanding Does a nice job for basic sanding. Better than orbital, vibrator types for knocking off my outside wood walls jobs.Purple 'paint-eater' sander disc I bought from Lowes lasted longer than the black one shipped with the product.Need to use both hands to use to keep flat on surface. 4Better than a hand scraper, could use more durable handle This product definitely works. I'm painting the exterior of my house. I've been using a hand scraper for about a month. It's a big house. This tool really speeds the process. Removes paint and smooths the surface of rough wood. The hand scraper can damage the wood if too much pressure is used. This tool doesn't harm the wood. Some of the lower panels are well weathered and this really cleans those areas. I've put about 10 hours of use on this tool. Wore out two of the grinding wheels - but they last way longer than sandpaper and can go over nails without a failure (unlike sandpaper). My only complaint is regarding the plastic flip handle. This broke after one day (5-6 hours) of use. I simply picked it up by the handle on day two and it broke off. Could use a more durable design. However, the unit still works fine without the handle. For the price, it's worth the buy in my opinion. Even with a broken handle, the amount of time saved compared to hand scraping is worth the price. Plus, it does a much nicer job than scraping. 4It stays decently cool during extended periods of use and that in turn ... This tool does eat some paint. I bought it stain one side of my house and it certainly did its job. It stays decently cool during extended periods of use and that in turn keeps your hands cool.It did a great job of stripping damaged and flaking stain from the house. You have to be careful with it, it will take you for a ride quick due to its power and vertical design. Two hand operation is a must, which isn't always possible from a ladder or in certain situations. I was able to sand my entire house in about a day using this machine and a hydraulic travel lift.My one complaint is the shaft lock. It broke after I went to change my first pad out. The shaft is threaded to the right and the machine turns to the right. So every time you use it, the pad is getting tighter on the shaft. The small shaft lock out pin does not have enough strength to hold against the reversing of the pad change out. I was still able to stick an Allen key down in the hole and unlock the pad, but still.Other than that it did its job. I'll (hopefully) never have to use it again to strip my entire house again. 3
