Customer Reviews

Great replaceemt of wind up timer After 35 years my wind up timer quit. This requires access to the neutral white wire which was in the box. The old one did not which could cause running new wire. Replacement very easy, remove wires from old timer connect three wires using the wire nuts. Connect green wire to ground. Use a voltage teste to make sure you connect the supply, hot wire to the correct wire as per instruction sheet 5White? It was cheaper than the Leviton LTB12-1LZ, so that was exciting for about 5 minutes until you actually try to install it. First the "white" isn't white. No way to mistake that, it is a light cream and in no way could be confused with any other electrical switches/panels that are white. Second, I echo the litany of comments made about it not fitting Decora sockets/panels. It does not. So I just went and spent the right money for the Leviton LTB12-1LZ which is white and mates with Decora panels perfectly. This Woods item will merely go to the scrap heap. 1Works well! These things work great. Made a couple of charging stations for power tools using this to turn the charger completely off when not in use. 5Easy to hook up and use. I made mine into a portable timer, in a double plastic electrical box. I used an IEC 320 connector so I could have a removable power cord. I have used it so far to turn off outside portable lights and inside table fans. I am surprised Woods did not use binary, and have this be a 15 hour timer. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 etc instead of 1-2-4-8. Same indicators could be used, just add the hours in your head, 1 + 2 = 3, 8+4+2+1 = 15. Will have to wait to comment on reliability.Woods 59013 Decora Style 8-4-2-1 Hour Electronic Timer, White Reliability Update Nov 3,2012 - My timer failed about 3 months after I purchased. The failure was that the red light would come on, but pressing the button did nothing. I contacted the manufacturer, Coleman Cable [...]and obtained a replacement. The unit does have a 1 year warranty. They did request a dated invoice (easy to do on Amazon.com) and I received my replacement. I did troubleshoot the failed timer, and found it was the push button itself. I found the exact button on a popular auction site and purchased 5 of the buttons for $1.50 including shipping. Had to wait about 3 weeks for arrival of the parts, but I now have 2 working timers, and some spare buttons in case they fail again. Even with the failed first unit, I think this is a great timer, and hopefully the replacement will have long life. 5Easily installed; works nicely for roof cables Our roof cables were not working well to prevent ice dams; I thought it was because the old-fashioned mechanical timer-switch only allowed a 30-minute run time*, and I bought this as a replacement. It does exactly what it says it does --- allows me with the touch of a button to turn on the cables for a one-hour, two-hour, four-hour or eight-hour run. It's crowded in a standard junction box, but easily installed in a deep one. Wiring is easy, but access to the white ("cold") wire is needed -- so it may have to be created if the box has the white wire as an un-tapped run-through. As others have noted, the face relief is shallow, so spacers under the mounting screws may be needed to make a faceplate seat properly. There was no faceplate provided (they cost a couple bucks and are readily available); wire nuts were provided, but were too small if more than two wires were being joined. It comes in a few different time-ranges, so it's pretty versatile; it works quite nicely once installed. It's both nicer and less expensive than the ones I found in big-box home/hardware stores. If it proves durable, I'll be very, very pleased with it; I've already bought another.(*it turned out that it was also incorrectly installed) 5Limited Function. Loud button. Works ok, but really wish there was an ON position, as I often need the fan to stay on all night. Our main Timer use is when we're in between seasons... The Texas fall days can still be pretty warm when going to bed, only to get pretty cold in the middle of the night. So we keep the fan on while falling asleep so that the room is not so hot, then as the night gets colder the fans switch off, so you don't wake up cold in the middle of the night. But for the summer nights we need the fan ON all night. So you turn it on for the full 8 hours at the kid's bed time... but that ends up short from the full night... so I would go around later on re-setting them for another 8 hours. Problem is that the button is VERY loud. So I would end up waking up the kids. Not good. For one of the bedrooms I ordered this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001RJ8X0M/ref=pe_1098610_137716200_cm_rv_eml_rv0_dpMore expensive, but well worth the extra cost. 3Zero Stars (if I could) This is an extremely dangerous product! I ordered one to connect to an electric towel warmer. The Warmer's draw is safely within the listed capacity for this item. Soon after I installed the timer we realized that, on occasion, when we set it for one or two hours it stayed on for as many hours as it took us to notice it was still on. We had to turn it off manually. We immediately returned that one and requested another to replace it. After a few months of use the replacement began to do the same thing. It ran more than twenty-four hours, twice, before I disconnected it. Having most any device run for that long is very risky and a heater especially so. This is an inherently dangerous, poorly manufactured device and should be avoided. 1Poorly designed and stopped working after r months of little to no use I purchased this to control a whole house fanthat I installed. It was difficult to install due to the wires in the back that had to be twisted to the whole house fan wires, which led to a large bunch of wires in the small space provided behind the box. Another product had a better design where you just plug in the fan wires into holes in the box. Since it was winter, we did not use the fan very much for the first 4 months after installation. When it came time to use it, the switch acted up and did not work most of the time. 1works great, but requires 4 wires for installation: Hot, Neutral, Load, and Ground. Check your switch box before ordering. Connected this up, and it works great. Be aware, when you dig behind your old light switch, you may only have 2 wires running to your old switch, and this timer unit requires 4 wires: Hot, Neutral, Load, and Ground. It's not uncommon for electricians to skip the ground wire on your switch and just tie your neutral lines together behind the switch in the box, so dig behind there and hopefully you will find them! If you want to be really sure, check for all the wires you need behind your old switch before you order this unit. Of course, turn your circuit breaker off when you dig around back there. 5Not reliable Purchased and installed two of them to act as simple timers. Unfortunately, neither one work reliably and shut down early at random times. At first I thought maybe it was a factory mix-up and they were just labeled and packaged wrong (we bought the 8-hour timers). After testing, there was simply no consistency to the time they stayed on. Set for 8-hours and sometimes you got 2 hours, sometimes 15 minutes.I cannot suggest that you purchase this product..... 1
