Customer Reviews

Are you serious? Maybe I got one of the old models, or maybe I got a lemon..I was using it indoors at 1/64 power and got 2-3 shots before it stopped working. I am going to assume this is because it overheated, as it was very warm to the touch. I left the batteries out for about an hour for it to cool down, then replaced with fully charged batteries just in case. I got one test shot off, then it wouldn't fire again.I am pretty upset, to say the least. I will be inquiring about a return/replacement.--------EDIT:Amazon replaced the flash, and the new unit seems to work better... I haven't had a chance to put it to much use though...EDIT 2: I used this flash a handful of times over the last couple years. (I've been too busy to take pictures these days) today I started taking some pictures and the flash stopped working...I did drop it from about six inches onto the floor on accident, but I would think that should be fine. I'm not sure if it was that fall or just that the flash died, either way I don't think this flash wad worth the $180 I spent on it two years ago. I probably wouldn't spend $100 on it now to be honest. I'm very disappointed in the quality of this flash. I originally was sent a unit that overheated after a few shots, then this unit with literally under 100 flashes over its entire life has stopped working.Yes, I tried new batteries. Yes, I tried allowing it to cool, although it felt cool to the touch already...Very annoying. I've messaged the seller about the warranty I purchased, but I'm not thinking it will be any good since I bought it so long so. 2Best Flash. The build quality is solid. It performs flawlessly, just like a Canon Speedlite and more. The best feature of this flash, in comparison to the Canon EX II series, is that there are sound prompts indicating proper/under-exposure as well as flash ready. I shot >1000 pictures with it on a 5D mark II, at a wedding this last weekend and never had to look at the back of the flash once since the sound keep me well informed. Yet, less than 10/1000s pics were shot when flash was not ready! Very different and so liberating. Canon flash users (like myself), you owe it to yourself to check this out even if cost is not a consideration. 5DON'T BUY THIS! DON'T BUY THIS! You should buy the Yongnuo YN-685 instead. It's newer and better and is only a tiny bit more expensive. Or if you are reading this in the future, get whatever the latest and greatest is from Yongnuo. Don't get me wrong, the 568EXII is a quality speedlight and Yongnuo is a good brand but the 568EXII not the best choice. After I bought two of these I figured out that optical communication was not going to work for me, I needed radio control so that I could use high speed sync and so that I could place my speedlights out of line-of-sight. I bought the 622 transceivers and 622-TX controller. So that's like $270 all together. I am not thrilled with them. It extra bulk, batteries and another two switches that I have to remember to turn off. After I got my 568EXIIs I figured out that I should have got the YN-685 models with built in radio control. I bought three of those now and they are perfect! I'm going to sell my 568EXIIs at a loss and replace them with more YN-685s. 4Warranty is a nearly joke. seller who won't give full info in the 1st email. You need to punch the info out bit by bit The speedlte turns itself off whenever I turn it from a vertical position to horizontal position, on or off camera. It frustrated me. I bought it last Nov (Nov 2017), and didn't get to use it until recently (Feb 2018). It is a very new out of the box condition. I contacted the Amazon seller, and ask for warranty and repair, since their name looks like an official Yongnuo company, well, I was wrong! They sent me this:"Thanks for your purchase of our YONGNUO speedlite. We offer 1 year warrenty for all our YONGNUO products and you need to send it back to our company in Shenzhen China to test and repair."The "We" in the sentence made me think the seller will take care of the repair, but these are what they only sent, no instructions how to proceed. So I follow up asking how, then the seller replied: "Good day!Firstly, you need to send an email to our customer service center and see if they could prive you any solution. And the email address as below[e-mail address removed]" (end of the message) Since the email was removed by Amazon, so I asked again for the email, then the seller replied:"Pls go to our YONGNUO official website and you will see the after-sales service address, and write an email to tell them your problem and require them to offer you the solution." (end of the message, no link provided) So I searched on Google, and trying to figure out where is their repair department. I found Yongnuo HK website which seems has a customer service department, so I sent an email on Feb 27 morning (EST), and they responded on March 1 morning (not a slow response). I copy and pasted the first email i sent it to the seller to them, and Yongnuo HK replied: "Thanks for your email. In this case, we advice you to try with both multigroup of AA and rechargeable fully charged batteries with a different brand. Besides, could you carefully check whether the metal contact chips inside the battery compartment has been rusted, oxidized or sunken(one or more battery will not bounce)? You can try again after cleaning and use tweezers to emboss the metal plate a little bit.Thank you very much for your great support for YONGNUO products!" Since I tried different brand of batteries and the metal contact chips are so new and shiny to be even considered to be rusted, oxidized or sunken, i asked for a repair, they replied:" Thanks for your reply. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience brings you because of product malfunction. In that case, since we do not have service center in your country, if it is indeed needed, you can send it to us(China) for repairing, but you need to undertake high postage. (Please note that you should undertake the shipping cost back and forth, and the postage sending the item back to you is about $43USD or more) So we advice you to contact the seller to negotiate according to the purchase agreement. Or you can ask the seller for help of sending it to us for repairing. Thank you very much for your great support for YONGNUO products!"From what I wrote above about the seller's several messages, apparently they don't want to have anything to do with it! So I said ok, I will send it, I want this product to work. Then they empahsize the high postage ($43 or higher) which want to scare me of sending it back to them in Shenzhen, China for repair, and added several lines about my liability of paying them if they need to replace some parts, and they have the rights to refuse to repair.Oh, and did I forgot to mention the SLAVE mode doesn't work on my unit? My unit just cannot switch to SLAVE mode but Master mode.Just want to warn you about buying cheap speedlite thinking saving money, but it is a chance thing altogether. Now it is 20 days after I first contacted the seller, and I just got the repair department's address in Shenzhen. Hope this will worth the postage and won't cost any more drama. 1I would like to give them four stars These flashes are really a mixed bag. I would like to give them four stars, mainly because of the value they represent, but I believe Yongnuo chose to cut some corners on quality that make the flashes a bit difficult for me to use. I ll start with the good:Let me first say that these flashes honestly can t be beat for the money. The ettl functionality works as well with my camera as the canon flash I own. The hi-speed sync function works flawlessly 95% of the time with an occasional shutter line through the screen. In terms of flash functionality they are every bit as good as my canon flash. I also purchased a set of YN-622c wireless radio flash triggers and a YN-622c wireless radio flash controller. I won t review those components here but suffice to say they allow me to move my Yongnuo YN568ex 2c s off my camera with full hi-speed sync and ettl functionality. I can t believe how well the entire system works for the money. After reading several reviews claiming these flashes tend to overheat, I purchased 6 of them to use in two triple flash brackets, each in a soft box for my outdoor portraiture so I can keep the flash power lower to prevent overheating. I have had no issues with heat or the battery compartment doors to date (several reviewers have complained about the battery door breaking). I ve used them quite extensively so far and I find the menus to be very intuitive and easy to navigate. As of yet I haven t had to pick up the manual. As I stated above, the HSS works brilliantly outside allowing me to shoot at f2.8 in broad daylight (with my client in the open shade) giving me beautiful bokeh and saturated background colors. Also, the battery life is fantastic with rechargeable NiMH s, and the cycle time is less than 1 second at power.Outside the flashes have a lot of pop. I rarely use a bank of three flashes any higher than power to get a perfect exposure on my clients. This is the highest power setting recommended by the manufacturer for heavy usage to prevent overheating. So, for just about thirteen hundred dollars I got a mobile lighting setup that allows me to use all my cameras (Canon 5d mark 3) flash functionality on and off camera, and all controllable from the YN-22 flash controller. So far the flash tubes haven t overheated on me and I get pro-level consistency in the flash power and color temperature output. 4Excellent speedlite for the money... until it overheated Exactly as advertised, fully supported Canon ETTL. Zoom, recharge time, overall brightness output, high speed sync, build quality are all great value for the price. A Canon strobe like this would be $600. Well worth the investment from a strictly manual flash. Recommended!EDIT/CHANGE OF REVIEW:After of about four different session with this flash, something went wrong. I turn the flash on, it fires perfectly once, and then fails to fire again. Some internal electrical problem. The flash broadcasts it's low battery light sequence, but replacing the batteries with brand new AA's does not fix the problem. I have a feeling it overheated and never recovered. I did not push it at all, only used it indoors. Regardless, a high-performance strobe such as this should be able to put up with outdoor shooting. It appears others have had overheating issues as well. I liked the flash, it did everything as expected when it worked. I'm not sure if there is just a bad batch of these out there or not, but since this is the only cost-effective product like this out there, I will most likely try it again further down the road. 2ETTL mode wont synchronize- M mode always fires at full power Crap. In terms of build quality, although I haven't seen or used any high end flash to make a comparison, this thing seems solid and high quality except for its flimsy battery door. However, whether it really does what it is supposed to do beside how it looks is something that I only figured out when I tried to use it. I had bought this but since portrait isn't my thing I hadn't used it much, only a handful of times with family. The other day I took this out and mounted it on my Canon 6D to take a few head shots of my girlfriend, I noticed ETTL fires but photos come out dark, not synchronizing with the flash. I thought it might be just a setting somewhere in the camera or the flash that I haven't done right especially because I haven't used this much and am not familiar with it. So I switched it to M mode, it worked but I noticed photos are overexposed even when I put it at 1/128 output. So we increased the distance, still quite overexposed. We then used a cheap umbrella that I recently bought to to bounce the light, but realized the flash just consistently fires at high mode no matter what settings I use. Only then I thought to test it to see if it works as it should. So I placed the camera on tripod, shot a few pictures of the room about 5 m away with all output modes starting from 1/128, 1/64, 1/32 and so forth, all photos came out with identical look, a bit washed out. So here we go, I found out that the flash doesnt adjust according to the power settings and always fires at full power. I suspect the issue with ETTL mode also must have something to do with this, we tested it on Canon 600D too, same issues. Also it eats up batteries very quickly which now I realize is because it always fires at full power. So pretty much trash, wasted money on this, I had another Yongnuo flash that had disappointed me with broken battery door. This one is now practically useless as you'd find it very hard to get much use of a flash that only fires at full power. My advice for those who are considering buying this, if you are an amateur like me don't waste your money on this just because it seems affordable, find something second hand but reliable brand. I don't think I got more than 10 decent shots out of this before it broke, so $10 per shot, what a deal! If you are pro, I wont have much advice for you as you know better what you are doing, I just think it would be a risk to rely on this flash for a professional work even though it looks fancy on the outside. 1Works Great Until it Quits Working It worked very well for the first 10-12 months I used it. I was quite happy with the power and the E-TTL performance. There were no communication problems with the camera when directly mounted on the hot shoe. There were no communication issues when using a YN-622C-TX on the camera and a YN-622C on the flash. Everything worked as expected: E-TTL, HSS, Second Curtain Sync. Sometimes bouncing it required a little positive exposure compensation.Starting about 10 months after I bought it there were occasional times when it would seem to fire at full power when mounted on the hot shoe of a Canon 5D mk III and set to E-TTL. A time or two I had to turn it off and then back on to get it to reset and begin letting the camera control the power again when this occurred. Without the power cycle it would continue to fire, but seemingly at full power for every shot. It happened so rarely and still worked well the rest of the time that I didn't think a lot of it.At just past 12 months I had an incident when setting up for a shoot where the flash was mounted on the hot shoe but the camera did not detect it. I couldn't access any menu setting on the camera that required the flash to be active nor would the flash fire. The menu on the flash appeared to be working, but no matter what the setting was it would not fire via the camera. A power cycle didn't change anything. Another power down, removing the flash from the hot shoe, then placing it back on the hot shoe, and powering it back up seemed to fix it and I thought no more of it as it worked fine the rest of the evening. Then, about 14 months after purchase it pretty much stopped working at all. When I turned it on with a fresh set of batteries installed it would give one very bright (full power?) flash, regardless of the power set, and then refuse to fire again. The light indicated it was ready to fire again but neither the camera nor the test button could cause it to fire. The longer I left the batteries in the flash the warmer the flash felt to the touch! The only solution was to turn it off and uninstall the batteries. After an extended cool down time it will fire again for one very bright discharge and then show it is ready to fire again but refuse to actually fire. I've tried this several times over a several day period with always the same result.I shoot mostly sports/action and don't use flash at all for a large part of my photo activity. I would estimate that there were only 2,000-3,000 total pops on the flash when it stopped working. 3Could be perfect if only... These flashes are really a mixed bag. I would like to give them four stars, mainly because of the value they represent, but I believe Yongnuo chose to cut some corners on quality that make the flashes a bit difficult for me to use. So far the flash tubes haven t overheated on me and I get pro-level consistency in the flash power and color temperature output. All that said, it s time for the bad:The clamp and hot shoe plates on these flashes and triggers are a joke. I haven t seen anyone else mention this fact, but since I did purchase 6 flashes, 6 triggers and one controller I m going to assume it s a design flaw or a poorly conceived cost saving measure on both the flashes and the triggers. Either way, the result is a flash and trigger that are never fully locked down on a mount (or a flash on a trigger). Even with some serious cranking they can still fall off a camera or cold shoe fairly easily. Also, once locked down, the locking wheel on both the flashes and the triggers are almost impossible to unscrew, but it still doesn t hold the flash securely, partially because the locking wheel doesn t make good contact with the top rim of the shoe, and partially because the metal plate on the flash is too small to make solid contact with the inside edges of the shoe so it constantly wiggles and slides around. Even when fully clamped down I can still slide the flash off my camera or an off camera bracket quite easily. I ve been very careful with them so far, but today a trigger finally slipped off my triple flash mount with the flash attached and fell about 4 feet onto my hard tile floor. The flash hit pretty hard and nothing broke on the housing. Oddly enough, the metal contacts that complete the circuit on the bottom of the inside of the battery compartment flattened out from the impact preventing the batteries from completing a circuit and cutting off the power. I was able to gently bend the contacts back up with a micro screw driver and got the flash head working again, but I doubt it will be a permanent fix. Fortunately the flashes are cheap so I ordered another one just in case the dropped one stops working. I ve only owned them for three weeks so I hope this won t be a common occurrence. This is unacceptable! However, I don t have the money to drop on 6 Canon 600ex s or a couple of Phottix Indras so I ll have to live with it for now.I ve purchased off brand and used flash guns for years and have never run into a problem with the hot shoe and clamping mechanism. If these weren t so cheap it would be a deal breaker. However, if I have a flash or trigger com loose every three weeks and wind up losing a flash because of it, the value will become non-existent in short order. I would definitely recommend these to any flash photographer on a budget, but be very careful with them when they are mounted. If I had about double the money on hand I would have gone with a Phottix Indra set up to get the HSS functionality I need but I just couldn t afford it. If you have a little more money but still can t afford to fork out the cash for 600ex s or pro photo b1 heads and you need HSS and or ettl functionality the Phottix Indra looks like a good system (for Canon and Nikon users plus I believe a Sony version is on the way). If you re poor like me, then get these.I hope this was helpful. 3Fires at full power in manual no matter the setting. Bummed. I've had this for about 7 months and used it a handful of times for a couple gigs. For some reason it started to fire only at full power in manual mode no matter what setting I change it too. It just went crazy and unfortunately this happened when I was doing an event. I read somewhere this happens to 1 out of 50 yongnuo flashes and the issue is a fried IGBT. I'm going to look into getting a refund with the warranty but I hope they don't make me pay for shipping overseas. If they do I luckily I payed with a credit card that has an extended warranty so I might claim it through my credit card.Another thing to note: I had an issue where I had the diffuser panel up (the clear one) and it wouldn't change the focal length on the flash and it was also firing at full power. I googled the issue and apparently if you have the diffuser panel up it will stay at the widest focal length on the flash. So I put the diffuser panel down and it fixed that issue. This doesn't contribute to the one star review but i just want to mention it in case it's helpful for anyone. 1
